Since birth, Huangfu Jie was feared and viewed as an ugly freak. His painful and tragic childhood twisted his heart and made it wicked. Zhang Ping, a eunuch, is the only one who cares about Huangfu Jie. This unwelcome prince and his clever eunuch will cause a huge storm in political affairs.
Ugh I almost feel bad for this manhua coz it's another good build up ruined by an anti-climatic ending. THOSE LAST TWO CHAPTERS is what I'm talking about. The pacing is well-done, an approximate 60% of the chapters were spent on prince Jie's development- from a submissive "ugly" weak prince to a competent man in a few years. The mask was a nice touch, that object as well as eunuch Zhang Ping's torment were major turning points in stirring up his courage to change. The other spoilt princes look like SHITTY BRATS next to him. The events that unfold after the four years time-skip were about rising suspicions on a royalty's murder case, with the princes as prime suspects; the heated interests on this murder case somehow subsided afterwards and was replaced by some royal drama involving marriage. That marriage part of the story was NOT for me unfortunately but I still managed to read thru it, coz all of a sudden it's just dem throwing new family surnames in our faces, with events like who's uniting with who to secure political power and shits. YES BUT ALL THOSE BUILD-UPS were wasted on a rushed conclusion man. There's legit no resolution, their version of a resolution was those last 2 chaps which for God's sake isn't any of the readers hope for. I mean i accept that as an ending but not when they left out those unfilled plot holes near the end!! LMAAAAOOO??? Haahahahahaaaa
Ugly prince? How is he ugly?! The abused male lead falls for his servant who treats him like a normal human being, a pretty recurring trope in fiction. There is palace politics, parental neglect, bullying, abusive family, a bit of kung fu, and a relationship that grows against class differences in this manhua. But none of this is properly explored. The characters and the plot developments are shallow and quite predictable. Even with the romance plotline, i am not convinced about the eunuch's feelings. He just goes along with whatever the prince says and often helps him in his own ways. Most of the time he brushes off the prince's advancements just like that. They do have a bond and they cherish each other but this isn't enough to establish the existence of a romantic relationship between them. I am just assuming that the eunuch finally accepted the prince's proposal and became his lover. The last 3 chapters made me feel like i skipped a 100 chapters before that. Everything is pretty average.
