The Strongest Wizard Becomes a Countryside Guard After Taking an Arrow to the Knee

Alfred Rindt is the strongest wizard. After taking a cursed arrow to the knee, he just wants some peace and quiet to heal. But, being a famous hero has its downsides. Everyone in the royal capital is demanding his assistance! Alfred decides he needs to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, so he takes a job as a village guard in the countryside. Will Alfred finally get the rest he so desires, or will the countryside prove to be just as lively as the city he left behind?

Alfred accepts a job to act as a guard for the remote village of Murgh, because being in the hustle and bustle of the city has only served to aggravate feir knee injury. Even though fe no longer has an adventurer party, fe accumulates a leisurely party (also known as a "harem") made up of the elf Millet, feir younger sister Colette, the telepathic wolf Femme, and the demon Vivi. And even though Al's supposed to be relaxing and essentially retired, an inordinate percentage of chapters involve fem fighting threats. To be exact, in the twelve chapters released so far, fe engages with a basilisk, a wolf king, a monstrous boar, a demon, a large group of bandits, and an undead dragon. There are only five chapters which actually feel leisurely. In these chapters, we see eating, sleeping, and bathing at hot springs. Which, to be fair, aren't very interesting without the action-packed chapters. For me, the most disappointing part of the manga was when they had Vivi just get over feir discomfort with killing and eating the meat from a cow which fe had bonded with and even named. The question of whether it's moral to end another life to sustain your own (especially when there are other food options available) is not an easy question. And furthermore, the question of whether people should eat the meat of life forms that they personally knew and bonded with adds even more complications. But this manga resolves it by having a child just flippantly say "everyone eats living things to survive" and that's basically it. If the manga had no intentions of actually grappling with this issue, then they shouldn't have even introduced a character with that quandary in the first place. As it is, it just makes me feel that the author sees vegetarianism as stupid and felt like sharing that opinion. [Reviewed at chapter 12]
