A series of dark, atmospheric vingettes, this collection reads all too quickly and leaves the reader thirsting for just one more story. It's amazing how in sixteen stories, mostly published in an eight-page format, Tatsumi managed to approach so many themes with such completeness: jealousy, rage, despair, infidelity, and paraphilia. Nothing could be farther from the angst-ridden school days manga that I'm accustomed to reading, and I found that very refreshing. These stories take the dreariness of working-class life in the late 1960s and make it captivating. Relative to the time investment required, few manga will be as rewarding as this collection.
