One rainy night after a school festival, a group of students from Kisaragi Academy decide to perform the "Sachiko Ever After" charm, which will unite them forever as friends. Once the ritual is done, a sudden earthquake transports them to Heavenly Host, a torn down elementary school. Unbeknownst to Satoshi and his friends, however, is the horrific past behind it which culminated in its demolition. As they look for each other and try to escape from Heavenly Host, they soon find out their lives are at the mercy of those affected by that same bloodied past.
In the Hakurei shrine warehouse the not so helpful, klutzy, Ibuki Suika and shrine maiden Hakurei Reimu are the only ones working on the preparations for the upcoming festival. Suika is then sent off to do the shopping, when Reimu notices the disappearance of the shrine's donation box. Journalist Shameimaru Aya who suddenly shows up, suggests the box may indeed have been stolen - strangely enough since it is always empty. Aya goes into detective mode, quickly summoning mage Kirisame Marisa, who is supposed to help find the missing box. As it turns out many other things have mysteriously disappeared the night before. Much work still lies ahead of Reimu... and who or what is the shadowy figure among the trees near the shrine?
The story begins in the early Showa era of the 20th century. A mysterious old man on a train relates the disappearance of his older brother three decades ago, near the 12-story Ryouunkaku tower that once stood in the seaside town of Uozu, Japan. The mystery revolves around telescopes, peep shows, and the blurred boundary between reality and dreams.
