Rumors revolving around The Book of Vanitas, a clockwork grimoire of dubious reputation, draw Noé, a young vampire in search of a friend's salvation, to Paris. What awaits him in the City of Flowers, however, is not long hours treading the pavement or rifling through dusty bookshops in search of the tome. Instead, his quarry comes to him...in the arms of a man claiming to be a vampire doctor! Thrust into a conflict that threatens the peace between humans and vampires, will Noé cast in his lot with the curious and slightly unbalanced Vanitas and his quest to save vampirekind?

Nowadays, shounen ,as a genre, little by little is steadily moving into the trash-tier zone and it is very close to reach its final destination. Mochizuki Jun, the creator of Pandora Hearts, once again shows how it is to be done. The manga focuses on a story of a vampire, Vanitas, who was hated by his own kind. Vanitas, having drowned in hate and depression created a powerful grimoire that cursed all the vampires and had enough power to eradicate monsters once and for all. Many years after, nothing is known about the poor vampire, Vanitas. Many years after, Noé, a young man travelling aboard an airship in 19th century Paris is to fulfil his teacher’s mission and find the Book of Vanitas. A sudden vampire attack leads him to meet the enigmatic Vanitas, a doctor who specializes in vampires and much to Noé's surprise is just a normal mortal, but also the owner of the Book of Vanitas. What are the secrets behind the vampire attacks and what secrets does the Book of Vanitas hide? The Case Study of Vanitas is my second encounter with Jun Mochizuki that is why I did not hesitate even for a second to read her manga. The manga has many details and secrets that are being thrown at the reader right from the first chapters, so you will not have even a second to reconsider what you read, so you will never have time to feel bored. On top of that, the manga has gothic inspired, Paris setting, steampunk story following vampires, a very well-written story, I dare say. It also has quite interesting characters that, too, offer enough development. All in all, this manga is a real hidden gem. Time to get hyped for the upcoming anime adaptation. This is going to be one hell of a ride!
shouldve reviewed it earlier but oh well, GO FOR IT! the overall vibe of the anime is really very interesting- the setting, both era & location and the way characters interact w each other. the art style is really pretty and intriguing characters (yes im talking bout vanitas) the plot is good and every chapter ends on a cliffhanger which is so cool (and frustating haha). give it a try if youre not into drama genre ^x^
