These two seem to have a similar feel when it comes to pacing and impact. The storylines are a bit different, but in the end you get a consistently driving plot with some basic layered characters to boot.
Seong-yun Han was just a boy when his parents were killed by monsters unleashed during a mysterious calamity called the “Dungeon Break.” Seven years later, Seong-yun is devastated to find that his grinding efforts to become a Hunter, fierce warriors who seek out and destroy monsters, are entirely in vain, as his fighting attributes have not increased at all. Both have a still taking MC with somewhat generic backstories and motivations. Set in different backgrounds, they deliver around the same feel; Book Eater in my opinion though, has much better pacing compared to the other.
Kang Minhyuk suffers from a rare disorder that makes it impossible for him to stop eating. Despite strict diet and exercise, Minhyuk’s weight is now life-threatening. As a last resort, his doctor recommends a unique treatment—Athenae, a VR game where one can eat as much as they want without consequence. Crispy fried chicken! Scrumptious samgyetang! Inside Athenae, all food tastes real, but earning it is no cakewalk. In order to live, Minhyuk must go on the ultimate fantasy gourmet adventure!

MC's are both able to steal skills by eating (by proxy in the case of Book Stealer) and use that strength to distinguish themselves among their peers. Gourmet Gaming is, in my opinion, a more lighthearted story but neither story is by any means 'dark' ... apples and oranges I suppose

Suddenly, he receives an unexpected phone call. "Makoto Kaneshiro, is that you?" The caller possesses detailed knowledge of Makoto's personal information and gaming habits. Caught off guard, Makoto attempts to shut down his computer, but… to his dismay, he discovers the same situation repeating itself, again and again.
