Maomao, a young woman trained in the art of herbal medicine, is forced to work as a lowly servant in the inner palace. Though she yearns for life outside its perfumed halls, she isn’t long for a life of drudgery! Using her wits to break a “curse” afflicting the imperial heirs, Maomao attracts the attentions of the handsome eunuch Jinshi and is promoted to attendant food taster. But Jinshi has other plans for the erstwhile apothecary, and soon Maomao is back to brewing potions and…solving mysteries?!

There are a lot of really great aspects of this manga--and the garden party story is superb--but there are also quite a few bad aspects to it. And as the series goes on, it seems like the bad aspects are increasing in frequency. The best aspects of the manga: A food-taster who loves the taste of poison. The dynamics between the consorts and their attendants. The cute artwork. The worst aspects of the manga: Jinshi and his relationship with Maomao. Some of the less interesting mysteries (the sleepwalker, the double suicide, the salt overdose, the arson, the seaweed poisoning, the locked cabinet). The aspects related to the brothel. This manga is so much fun to read, the art is so pretty, the story is almost like a detective novel, and the characters are wonderful! I love each plotline, learning how this world works and how it affects everyone is always so interesting. The characters are amazing, Maomao's cynicism is always so funny, along with her deductive reasoning and medical knowledge. Basically, read Kusuriya no Hitorigoto!
Maomao , a little cutie(but also peculiar) girl who wants to learn as much as possible about the benefits of herbs. It was almost inevitable that Jinshi, the playboy of the court, to notice this tomboy. She is too preoccupied with studying but this eunuch starts helping her, which might "catalyse" something inside her. Well, Maomao has all my respect for her lucid and rational way of thinking( 99% of time) .
