Sumi Sakurasawa is shy. Even simple things, like going for a donut with someone or calling out to a stranger that they’ve dropped something, paralyze her with fear. Her strategy? Become a “rent-a-girlfriend” and make some cash while she practices her people skills! But raising the stakes even higher might not be the foolproof solution she thought it was… And even worse, to keep the gig, she needs five-star reviews, and that means no freezing up or freaking out on a date… How is that even possible?!
The value of this comes from seeing the inner thoughts and struggles of someone with social anxiety--how fe stresses over which seat to choose in a cafe or how to convery feir thoughts to strangers when fe's too nervous to use spoken words. Don't expect the drama or romance that the main series has. Instead, just expect awkwardness and a cutely drawn girl. Not to be overly harsh or anything, but the dream that Sumi's striving for just feels like something that fe should give up on honestly. I feel like I would enjoy the story of a regular person having to cope with social anxiety much more than this story, where fe's pushing femself to do unnecessary things because of some dream goal fe has. There are a few chapters that connect to the plot in the main series (ch. 3, 7-8) as well as a couple that completely unnecessarily include cameo appearances from recognizable faces (ch. 4-5). The first two chapters have the lung-fish randomly introduce things, and a few chapters end with Sumi writing some lesson learned on a calligraphy board. [Reviewed at chapter 13]
