Black Butler

Black Butler

In Victorian England it is commonplace for the rich and wealthy to have a staff, led by a head butler, to run their households; the Phantomhive Estate is no different. The young and demanding Count Ciel Phantomhive, child owner of a toy company, lives in the grand countryside manor. Sebastian is his head butler, and the epitome of perfection; he effortlessly and gracefully completes his day-to day chores and fixes the countless mistakes of the other employees. However, whilst on the outside all seems prim and proper, a more sinister secret lies just beneath the surface. Sebastian is in fact a demon bound by a contract with the young count; he will loyally serve and fight for him in return for his soul.

If you want to read some dark comedy style manga then Black Butler and Pandora Hearts are good books to read. The supernatural undertones in both series come out shrouded in mystery and even some suspense. There is also a pleasant old fashioned feeling in regards to the clothing that bring the series to life.

YuiYui YuiYui says...

Both of these manga are based around the idea of a dark fantasy involving supernatural things from another world. In Pandora Hearts this is the idea of Chains and Black Butler, demons, shinigami etc. Also the idea around making a contract with this supernatural being is present in both. Another thing is that they appear to be based around the same timeline (which some people may find interesting.

They both have mystery, action, supernatural elements and great characters.

The series also have silly moments and dark moments at various points.

The mangas sometimes may have a similar feel.

Both are set in 19th Century inspired worlds and have European inspired fashion/architechture.

If you like one, give the other a shot! Personally I like both but have yet to properly get into the Black Butler manga :)

Cordierite Cordierite says...

Both are similar in their use of contracts with other worldly creatures. Each has a young protagonist with room to grow and servants that can double as a one man army. They have enough similarities and differences that you can be entertained without feeling like you're reading the same manga.

Alice in the Country of Hearts

But little does she know that she's wandered right into the middle of a dangerous power struggle involving just about all of Wonderland's attractive, weapon-happy denizens. And the only way for Alice to return home is to get acquainted with the lot of them?! How in the world will she manage that and still manage to stay alive?!

Pandora Hearts and Alice in the Country of Hearts play on the Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass theme in original ways. Without being retellings of the story proper these manga both draw elements from the Lewis Carroll story to craft their own universes. In Alice the shout-outs are integral to the very concept while Pandora relates to the novels in a less direct way that is mostly just aesthetic. There is plenty of adventure to both and take advantage of Wonderland's surreal atmosphere to further the plot.

If you like Karneval, you'll like Pandora Hearts. The art is almost the same as well as the as the atmosphere. The storylines are the only things not similar (Pandora Hearts has a "darker" storyline), but I highly recommened both!

They have the same kind of mistic alice in wonderland vibe and share a lot of similarities in characters.

Both of these Manga have heavy magical themes that affect the plot and characters. Each story has a mysterious all-powerful bad guy, as well as characters having a split personality that they themselves aren't aware of. Both of the main protagonists are young men and are watched/guarded by older male characters.

Overall both 07-Ghost and Pandora Hearts have similar plot and setting devices they are just exucated in very different ways.

07-Ghost and Pandora Hearts have very different stories and theming, but despite those differences, they are very similar manga. The main protagonists, Teito and Oz, are very similar, and the atmosphere is very similar between the two manga. Check both of these manga out, they are very good!

They're both from the same mangaka and they have a similar story and setting. Crimson Shell is like an early prototype of Pandora Hearts. There is an organization that has to deal with people infected by the disease of the Black Rose in Crimson Shell or with Chains from the Abyss in Pandora Hearts and the main characters are working for said organization.

Pandora Hearts and Red Raven have many major similarities, yet at the same time they don't feel like knock-offs of each other when reading them.
Red Raven and Pandora Hearts are similar in that there is an exquisite and elegant, yet gritty atmosphere about them both. Both feature protagonists who are part of a wealthy "family" (or you could go as far as to call them mafioso), and they both deal with conflicts between two (or more) organizations (as well as focusing on personal conflicts between the characters).
Neither manga is "innocent" by any means as they both portray a more grim and dark reality than many action graphic-novels.
That said, Pandora Hearts can be considered significantly more light-hearted in comparison to Red Raven.
Pandora Hearts focuses more on a fantasy-world whereas Red Raven deals more with a realistic world.

Both are reimaginings of the classic fairy tale Alice in Wonderland. They both take a darker view of the tale, and both are interesting reads. If you like one, you'll probably like the other as well.
