Onizuka-chan to Sawarida-kun

Onizuka is an Oni and her childhood friend Sawarida is a human who likes to touch weird stuff. She might be in love with him, but he is too dense for love or is it the other way around?

If you're into this kind of thing, then you'll be...into this...kinda...thing...um...Alright! Review over! I covered all the bases, right? No, but seriously, this manga fits into a certain style which probably appeals to some people, but which I have found too shallow to be worth a positive score. To be clear though, scores of 1s and 2s are when I actively dislike a manga and scores of 3s and 4s are when I'm okay with a manga but maybe it feels too shallow or cliched for me to say that I actively "like" it. Many of the chapters in this manga feel like they're just recycling commonly-used plot devices--like worrying about an indirect kiss or sharing an umbrella--or telling a seasonally-appropriate story--like the Christmas, New Year's, and Valentine's Day events. It has cute art with innocent and blushy flirting. Each chapter is pretty short and covers largely standalone situations where they both like each other but aren't able to express it yet. Which creates the romantic, "awww"-inspring equivalent of irony in the readers. With this manga specifically, the tension comes from Sawarida loving to touch non-humans and Onizuka feeling jealous at feir interest in touching other girls. The manga implies that feir jealousy is unwarranted since fe doesn't have romantic feelings for these girls, but that implication is somewhat undercut by the fact that we never see fem expressing interest in touching non-human boys, always girls. This makes it feel like there might be a romantic/sexual aspect to feir touching after all and that it's not just pure curiosity. I want to comment on something Onizuka said to Sawarida in chapter three: "you're a person who is free from prejudice against any different species." While it's true that animosity and hatred are much more harmful, fetishizing people (as fe does with non-humans) is still disrespectful--rather than treating them as people, fe's treating them as objects to be put on a pedestal and gawked at. [Originally reviewed at chapter 22] [Updated upon completion] Addendum: Up until the end, it still has a few cute moments here and there and the general vibe is about the same. The build-up to the confession scene is stupidly drawn out--only slightly alleviated by the self-aware jokes the author makes about how long it's taking. We get a beach scene and a scene with morning exercises. The parallels between touching monster parts and sexuality are made even stronger, with the guy feeling feir urges lessen when fe's entranced by the girl that fe's in love with and promising to always return to the girl even if fe goes out to touch others.
