Although When a Cat Faces West is set in modern Japan, follows Hiroto, his cat Shacho, and parter Chimo Kondo as they work to solve mysteries of flow phenomenon happening and helping to resolve what caused it much like how Ginko does with Mushi. The main character is essentially the same person as Ginko from Mushishi thrown in modern Japan and tasked with using his expertise to solve supernatural problems which definitely works well. They both have smart, quiet atmospheres that suck in to the stories.
