KingChronos KingChronos says...

Although When a Cat Faces West is set in modern Japan, follows Hiroto, his cat Shacho, and parter Chimo Kondo as they work to solve mysteries of flow phenomenon happening and helping to resolve what caused it much like how Ginko does with Mushi. The main character is essentially the same person as Ginko from Mushishi thrown in modern Japan and tasked with using his expertise to solve supernatural problems which definitely works well. They both have smart, quiet atmospheres that suck in to the stories.

Both are by Yuki URUSHIBARA and she has a great of writin each chapter of both stories almost like parables, typically disconnected from the other chapters. The episodic nature without cliffhangers or extreme tension makes both perfect stories for relaxing to a quick read before bed or when you have a moment of downtime.

There is said to be an ancient power that lies dormant deep within Earth. It took the shape of an ape but it was much more than that. Physically strong and psychologically powerful, nothing stood in its way. However, one day, this godlike being split into two: the physical part and the mental state. While the power of the physical part grew larger and larger, the mental part spread its energy throughout the planet into humans. Now, people using black magic are killing those with the spirit in them because as the mental part becomes weaker, the physical side becomes stronger - strong enough to destroy the planet.
