Mr. Mini Mart

Meet "Mr. Mini-Mart," Endou Nakaba - middle-school drop out, shut-in, and NEET - as he begins his very first job at a convenience store. Unfortunately, his temperamental co-worker, Yamai Kouhei, doesn't make things easy on him. When Endou accidentally witnesses an unexpectedly sweeter side to Yamai, he discovers that his rude and loud-mouthed co-worker might not be such a bad guy after all. Drawn to this new side of his co-worker, Endou looks past Yamai's often-unpleasant attitude and tries to get to know him better. Will working together be only the start to a more involved relationship?

Every time I would glance over the cover art for this one while browsing through my "Want To Read" stockpile, I would always think that it looked appealing. (I think I like the thin neck and casual atmosphere). So I finally decided to actually read it, and it was pretty good. As the old saying goes: always judge a book by its cover. The art on the inside is largely an extension of the cover art, though not in full color. But I don't actually care for Endou's crying face. Or feir smiling face. I think I just don't like the way the blush-lines and eye-glimmers are drawn. I'm also not a huge fan of the way Kunieda's hair shading is done. When Endou's middle school classmates had learned that fe is attracted to guys, they basically mocked fem and treated fem badly. This is contrasted with how Yamai had treated fem with almost indifferent acceptance when fe learned about it. And the guy that Endou had a crush on back in middle school, Kunieda, reacted poorly to learning that another guy liked fem. So I was expecting that this story would resolve with another parallel, showing Yamai reacting with grace and kindness upon learning that Endou likes fem. And fe does do that. But then Yamai goes further and starts reciprocating Endou's feelings, which is fine in theory but feels like a lesser resolution. Especially since it seems to sorta suggests that only people who are willing to reciprocate gay feelings can properly handle being liked by a gay person--an idea I'm sure the author didn't want to suggest in the slightest. I think the overall moral of the story--that people are just people, regardless of whom they're attracted to--would've been better served by showing that straight people don't have to distance themselves from gay people just because they don't reciprocate their feelings.
