Oversummoned, Overpowered, and Over It!

Name’s Inori Takafuji. I’m not really much of a “go-getter,” if you catch my drift—sleep’s more my style—but getting summoned to another world kinda messed things up. Bit hard to chill when you’ve got a king in your face telling you there’s a bad guy you’ve gotta go slay or whatever, you know? Plot twist, though—it’s actually not so bad. Getting the hero treatment sounds pretty nice, right? But then it happens again! Some other clown summons me, I get my obligatory superpower, and off I go. And sure, that’s fine. It happens, sometimes you get isekai’d to the wrong place. But then it happens AGAIN! Someone ELSE summons me, I get ANOTHER superpower, and then I’m somewhere totally new. Repeat ad nauseam. No idea what’s going on, but all I want is one thing: stop !@#$ing summoning me!

I am someone that absolutely, shamelessly loves isekais with OP protagonists. Even if they're terrible. As long as they're not boring, I will endlessly enjoy the cycle of watching nobodies get inexplicably summoned to fantasy worlds as heroes or demon lords or vending machines; whatever the gimmick is. So, of course I was interested in this manga. I like the concept of the same dude getting summoned repeatedly and accumumlating abilities as he gets acquainted with the goddess. The MC lounging on the ground as he kept getting summoned was peak comedy. However, the main character was what killed it for me fairly quickly. I can literally identify the moment my interest died: Chapter 3 [Part 2], when the MC starts laughing maniacally. It's the first time we really see any sort of emotional expression from him, so it's the moment when we finally see his true character. And all I could think was, "Ah. It's one of those..." He's an edgy self-insert power fantasy character with no personality outside of being a "cold badass". He gives off vibes of being written by a fake-woke incel and apparently "having no empathy" (a legitimate condition some people have) is synonymous with being heartless and incapable of any sort of affection. Now, I have seen comments saying things like "you just don't like that he's not a 'beta whimp' and can actually kill his enemies." Believe me, that is far from the problem. I have my fair share of merciless killer protagonists I love and I even love the cringey edgelords <3. The problem lies in how uncomfortable his behavior is. He'll suddenly be lording over people like a god (which I would normally think of as an enjoyable badass moment), but because he doesn't have any sort of personality or desires as a character, it's just like, "why should I care?" There's no catharsis from him finally releasing his powers or even rooting for him to win because there's literally nothing about him that is likable or even creates the illusion that he is, in fact, a character (There seemed to be some hope in the first chapter, but he just kept getting worse). He really is just a self-insert with no substance. And because he's a self-insert, the story focuses only on him and barely develops anything else like the world-building, side-characters, or relationships. The other characters are lucky if they get even a single defining trait. The only character that was given any sort of meaningful attention was the second princess, and even if it was interesting, the only function it seemed to serve was so the main character could pity and laugh at her. No offense meant to the author, but I felt like this was the nicest way I could put it. And honestly, what does my opinion matter anyway? If the MC's a self-insert then the only reason this manga exists is for the author's own enjoyment, and that's perfectly fine. Plus, it seems like there are others who also like it. I did find some of the MC's behavior towards women and other characters to be crazy uncomfortable though. Though, since I'm criticizing this one a lot, I might as well give other suggestions: Rising of the Shield Hero - I'm sure you've heard of it. Want an MC that has suffered™ and is an outcast? I unironically love this one. Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest - I've only seen the anime and the MC is a complete cringey edgelord but I honestly love it XD My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero's - Oddly similar to Arifureta in some places, but it's a good read even if there's not that much of it yet. The World's Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat - Title is pretty self-explanatory, right? Latna Saga: Survival of a Sword King - Stuck in the tutorial stage for 20 years. A little worse than getting summoned a few extra times lol Solo Leveling - Not an isekai, but I was reminded of it when reading this manga.  Second Life Ranker - Edgy revenge story with a badass MC. What more could you ask for? (Not exactly an isekai though) Dendrobates - Not an isekai or even a fantasy, but if you want a badass, morally-grey killer then this is your man.
