Having moved schools frequently throughout his childhood, Fujino has perfected the art of the false smile. Now his fifth school, his well-mannered smile is safely helping him make new friends, but one day, on the school roof, he finds a scarred boy sleeping there. That boy is the “Mad Dog”, the student all his classmates are afraid of. While Fujino is observing him, the boy opens his eyes, and then…
Worth the read. It's short, immersive, and pleasant. With a nice sense of resolution where you aren't left wanting. The two main characters both see through the outer facade of the other and fall in love with each other. Fujino's facade is a fake smile and shallow friendly demeanor; fe intentionally wears this facade in order to avoid being shut out of socialization for being a five-time transfer student. Tsukada's facade is unintentional; fe looks like a delinquent with feir glaring eyes and scarred cheek and fe has a rudely blunt speech pattern, but beneath it fe is actually a respectful and kind person. The main drama comes from some thugs from Omi High calling Tsukada out to fight with fem, and Fujino being worried about fem. The licking scene was weird and unexpected, but I guess some readers probably get gooey over that type of tongue action. Though it did match Tsukada's impulsive and almost animalistic nature.
From beginning to end that main character is incredibly relatable, sort of the average Joe feigning a smile to fit in. Till one day he meets someone who sees past his facade. From there it really picks up. It shows just how fast rumors can spread and mutate, and their consequences along with a beautiful relationship and how it grows. Only complaint is I wish there was more.
