The only aspect that makes this at all interesting to me is the fact that we can never be completely sure whether the events witnessed literally happened or whether they were just byproducts of the sailors' deranged minds. Other than that, it's mainly just relying on a gross-out factor to engage the readers--on the grotesque, rotting flesh. There's a bit of an unexpected twist near the end of the story, but honestly that twist felt weak. Like it only existed to include another brief moment of "what's happening?" without actually making the story any better. This is a shallow piece of horror, making use of cheap visual pressure points to evoke reactions in the reader.
