Ad Astra: Scipio to Hannibal

This is the story of two of the greatest military commanders in history: the Roman Publius Cornelius Scipio and the Carthaginian Hannibal. The story follows the two of them from their early life on. Hannibal is initially shown as a strangely silent infant, who seemed like the gods forgot to put a soul in his little body. However, he soon begins to speak in a way that shows his remarkable abilities. Hannibal and Scipio are driven enemies, and their struggle shaped an era.

if you read kingdom because you love the big epic fights between two armies then Ad Astra - Scipio to Hannibal is for you. it depicts the invasion of rome by Hannibal and how he managed to defeat the romans time and time again using great military strategies that are still studied to this day.it also has interesting and likable characters on both hannibals and romes side. personally i think this is a really underrated manga that deserves more love so if you like kingdom you will most likely like this aswell.

Both series are retelling of historical events, one set in Rome and the other set in China. Both series heavily focus on the military engagements, strategies involved within them, and policital consequences of the battles soon after.

Both series focus on roughly the same period in Chinese history and pay great attention to the politics and war strategies used in this period.

YinZ YinZ says...

Kingdom is set near the end of the warring state period (Around 250BCE, WSP = 476-221BCE), Change Ge Xing is set in the Tang Dynasty (618-907AD)Both are set in China, during periods of turmoil, for Kingdom : 7 states are going at it, and Qin wants to unify China. As for Change Ge Xing, the turmoil facing the Tang dynasty is Change Ge, and to be perfectly honest I'm not sure it's less frightening than having 6 states at your throat :pBoth mingle in wars, strategies and politics, but from the point of view of two totally different characters. While Xin is a "straight-forward" warrior and a former slave boy, on the other hand Change Ge is cunning, a great strategist, and a princess. Both are inspiring in their own ways, and they are both surrounded by "highly capable" friends.

Art:

The art is Change Ge Xing is just leagues above Kingdom

Story:

The story in both is absolutly fantastic, Kingdom retraces the story of "Why is China called China, and the story of the first emperor of China" while Change Ge is to the Tang Dynasty what Hannibal was to the Roman Empire. All of that set between various locations through the great plains, to the north (Huns/Turk territory).

tl;dr:

Kingdom is more "Battle heavy" while Change Ge Xing is more "Politic & Strategy" based, but still have its fair share of battles (large and small)

if you liked one, you'll definitely like the other :)

The story of the song of the long march takes place about 200 years later and has a similar style to it.

orpheusx9 orpheusx9 says...

Takes place in premodern China, lots of interesting politics and combat, really great character development and story telling about incredibly talented people clawing their way to greatness.

Only downside is that Chang Ge Xing is permanently stalled as the mangaka is fighting the publishers in a lawsuit :(

this is an amazing battle manga, set in warring states china, back during the time of the 500 year war, told from the point of view of an orphan slave as he carves out a path for himself through his many battles to becoming A Great General of the Heavens! it's also about the bloody path to the unification of all of china.it's a realy good manga and i haven't found any like it, it's unique in both art style and nature but includes many gory battle scenes.if you like passionate stories or tactical battle scenes this is for you.I also recommend it if you liked Claymore or Akumetsu. The thing that really reminds me of berserk with this one would probably bethat both deal dark and violent themes and are very much at their core character driven mangas and both are set in old-style worlds.Another thing they share is the gritty depictions of corpses and men dying in the wars, also both the main character Shin and Guts stand up to things no ordinary man should be able to face alone. -they are both epic badasses that continue their badassery in the face of other badasses like the badass main characters they are.however i guess Kingdom has a bit more of an uplift element,  guts kind of takes the cake for shitty childhoods/gritty backstories.still awesome.

RazielRMA RazielRMA says...

While Kingdom is more realistic and historical, Berserk is fantasy. However, both share in some common themes (action, adventure, swordplay, and a main character who has to work their way up from the absolute lowest to the top). Both have excelent stories.

Very similar atmosphere between these manga ,  Both MC at the beginning of series are looking for revenge and are in their teen years. Also both provides plenty of action , drama and gore.

Only difference is that Vinland Saga is based on Vikings but Kingdom is set in ancient China.

Historical manga about China. War and strategies. One-man army. Complicated situations and unexpected resolutions. Seinen. "Bokko" is much shorter than "Kingdom", but you can even find identical parts of the story in both narratives. Very cool! Worth it!

Both mangas happened in ancient Chinese history where wars were common in an effort to unite all lands in China. Thus, there were many epic battles and war tactics (Warning: violence and blood). The timeline was pretty near each other, where "Kingdom" took place in the Warring States period, while "Ryuuroden" happened after that, which was in the Three Kingdoms period.

Both stories followed a boy who got involved with the wars, politics, and strategies between nations/states/kingdoms. Both showed the Chinese history of their times in detail. If you already know the history, you get your spoilers, but nonetheless, both are still interesting stories to read. I've read Ryuuroden until chapter 92, and Kingdom chapter 486.
