After losing everything in the Great Famine, Amelia and Connor immigrated from Ireland to the United States of America in 1849 to find happiness and become rich in California during the Gold Rush period.
While I might be biased since I really like realistic historical anime and manga, this one is definitely well-executed. I rarely encourage people to check out a manga but this one is definitely it. Katabami to Ougon Describes a story of two Irish immigrants and their journey to and in the USA after the great famine. So around the 1845 to 1849 period. While a lot of things are exaggerated, and some tropes common to anime are used, it still captures the emotions of despair, hope, struggle, and achievement which come with such a journey in a very realistic way. Suggested read. Unfortunate that so few people have read it so far.
