I’m Really Not the Devil’s Lackey

Lin Jie, who has transmigrated into this world, runs a bookshop. Nice and passionate, he always recommends books that are capable of healing one's soul to customers who find themselves in a rough patch in life. Occasionally, he would recommend his own work to them as well. Over time, these customers have grown to respect him a lot. They bring him some simple souvenirs every day to repay him and ask him for recommendations of literary works. At the same time, they tell the people around them about this bookstore owner as well. They have respectful and affectionate ways of addressing him-"The Devil's Hyena", "The Communicator of Flesh Gospel of Books", "The Author of the Corpse Ritual" and " The Star Shepard".

In both all characters around MC think he's the strongest and the most inteligent person when in reality he's just speaking useless stuff that happen to be true or through misunderstanding look like profound knowledge.

FelixVanis FelixVanis says...

It's really similiar. An overpowered MC who wants to act cool. And caused by his acting skills everyone admires him as ag.n unbelievable strong bein

theliongirl theliongirl says...

Both are hilarious comedies where the MC is just role-playing and manages to convince everyone else that they're some kind of mastermind. In the background there are secret societies and awesome fights, while the MC is totally oblivious because they're caught up in their self delusions.

thunderfangepic thunderfangepic says...

In both, the MC views the world completely diferently from all the other people. They have really funny stories.

bookeater18 bookeater18 says...

Both MCs are oblivious to their impact on others and have created what they believe to be a fictional world yet it hits the mark of those around him.

Senso3514 Senso3514 says...

3 reasons why i think they're similar1- Isekai2-The Mc is somewhat op3-People misunderstand him as a clever person even though he's just spouting basic stuff from the real world

Majster Majster says...

It's really similar. Both mc are OP but they don't clearly see it. They are embraced by mystery about their powers and plan (from others point of view), but in reality they don't even know about that or think about it like "yeah that was nice scene". About the world represented - both are magic worlds which are quite easy to understand how they works. Also secondary characters are well developed and the more important think THEY AREN'T ANNOYING. Summirazing both mangas are great comedies with interesting plot, so if you like one of them, you will like the other one as well.

saminimaster saminimaster says...

The humor about everyone's misunderstanding of basically everything and a mc that dosen't even know whats going on is definitely hilarious.

NoGameNoLifeXL NoGameNoLifeXL says...

Kings of being seen as superior beings because of misunderstandings or coincidences, multiple times in both stories the main characters are placed higher than the average person, people referr to them as gods (not actually) unbeatale beings, ones just a person who wants to be a hero the other is just a really good salesman

Daati Daati says...

Both characters were isekai'd into a fantasy world that has magic or fantastical elements. The actions that they impart upon the residents of the fantasy world is taken as a serious matter despite the protagonists themselves considering it a joke or an overreaction. If you like the character interactions with the residents in Shadow, then Devil's Lackey can also scratch that itch to a lesser degree.

Vebtoons Vebtoons says...

Both MC’s reincarnate into another world and end up hiding their power and identity.

The Eminence in Shadow is more of a comedy, funny misunderstandings type webtoon, while The Academy's Undercover Professor is more of a action, Sherlock Holmes-y story type of vibe, except if the MC is more like a criminal.

Sunfish847 Sunfish847 says...

the undercover professer is basically shadow but without 8th grade syndrome. he has a billion myteries to solve and no leads, with half a dozen characters hot on his paper trail as well. great series!

Razept Razept says...

Both MC have many names to hide themselves. They both have realiable subordinates and have many who try to investigate them. They both cought up in comedy situation but turn into more serious and reaching their ultimate goal somehow.

In contrast, Professor have more mysterious story telling than Eminance since the story did not reveal this professor MC past right away like Eminance.

I like both.

Daati Daati says...

An isekai'd protagonist in a world that seems to be reflecting an era of the early 1800s with a system of magic imparted into the world. The similarities lie in the fact of stringing lies together to make things believable for both stories. The main difference here is that the Professor is lying and hoping the parties on the other end does not catch on. Definitely less comedic as the Professor is attempting to mold the world into his eyes while fighting off the myraids of secret antagonists hiding.

Both of these are isekai manga where the mc doesn't exactly know what they're doing, but seem like they are true masterminds to their subordinates. (Also OP mc, as you should expect from a lot of isekai manga)

Akakhilop Akakhilop says...

Basically Mc are OP but gets misunderstood by thier subordinates or underling or whatever

Try to act the coolest but became terrifying presence sigh

Thats why don't get delusional like these idiots

ArcEdge ArcEdge says...

Very similar mangas, with a more mature approach in Overlord than in The Eminence in Shadow.

While one relies a lot on his subjects to do various tasks, the other one always ends up doing them himself.

Same thing goes for the motivations and execution : One has the noble goal of searching for his long lost friends, the other simply does it because he wants to. Ainz has a habit of showing the superiority of Nazarick everywhere they appear, while Cid keeps everything anonymous and only gathers glory around his "eminence" persona (to a certain degree, that also applies to his first 7 followers).

If you want a darker, more serious manga, go for Overlord. If you want a relaxing and fun manga, go for The Eminence in Shadow.

If you enjoyed one, there is a strong chance you find in the other a lot of what made you enjoy it.

Am I Actually the Strongest?

Am I Actually the Strongest?

To be reincarnated into another world with the promise of a “cheat” power is one thing… but to be reborn as a baby, and then left for dead after your royal parents think you’re powerless?? That’s another thing entirely! Now the newly-born Reinhart—or Hart to his new friends—must find his way through a dangerous world…but luckily he’s got magic that’s quite literally off the charts!

Glassblower45 Glassblower45 says...

If you enjoyed One Punch Man for its equal seriousness and humor of the archetype its "hero" is centered around, you may enjoy The Eminence in Shadow. Where One Punch Man centered around the "superhero," The Eminence in Shadow's protagonist had an ideal of the "shadow character who aids from the shadows."

The story puts a lot of mocking humor of a character who pursued his character ideal to an overbloated max. But the ultimate results of his continued character into his reincarnated life comes with a twist that is somewhat expected and refreshing at the same time.

I would recommend giving both One Punch Man and The Eminence in Shadow a try if you liked either one for how it makes fun of two different heavily used "hero" tropes.

Galois Galois says...

Both are parrody mango where ther main charater is overpowered. A lot of the humor is focused around the world's peception of the main charater. In Sitama's case only a few people know how truely powerful he is and this leads to many misunderstandings. In Cid's case only his shodow garden know who he is and the humor come from the misscomunication between cid and the shodow garden. If you like the sort of humor where 2 people can hove a coherent conversation while talking past eachother then I would recomend both of these.

Why? because the mc actually gets misunderstand as someone who thought of it far and cunning when in reality they are just going rambo and saying what they want,

In the eminence in the shadow, the mc is strong and his delusional came true and every thing he does, he gets misunderstood as someone very wise and terrifying

In nageki no bourei, the mc isnt strong physically but his power later gets revealed slowly, he didnt think much but every actions he takes, he is misunderstood as if his actionshave meaning and everyone thinks him of someone who have everything planned out,

eminence is by far better but they are similar so i just wanna add this

Worse yet, he’s in the body of Cale Henituse, a count’s handsome slacker son destined to take a serious beating from the novel’s hero. Leeching off the count’s wine and wealth is fine and all, but there’s no way he’s going to be the hero’s punching bag…or worse! In this world of dragons, magic, and deception, can Kim Roksu change the novel’s plot to get off scot-free and enjoy the finer things in life?

The Eminence in Shadow is a satire piece where the protagonist is playing out their imagined role for their fun without realizing his role play is real the entire time. The entertainment lies in the protagonists oblivious but pinpoint actions on the deeper truths of the world. The comedy is predictable. Yet the intrigue of how deep the rabbit hole goes keeps you alongside the oblivious protagonist's role play for those moments of "no, this is real, and here are the details his subordinates thinks he knows about but really doesn't."

Lout of Count's Family is a recomendation for a protagonist who tries to move a pre-read story forward with only a few changes beneficial for himself. The catch is how he--now in the body of a minor antagonist early in the story--becomes the "hero" on the journey to avoid it. "My dream is to be a slacker," he says. Funny and ironic with layered depths you discover as the story progresses.

If you liked the premise of someone living a foreknown "role" and accidentally becoming the hero (with some "no, this is real shit" underneath), both The Eminence in Shadow and Lout of Count's Family are good and great reads (respectively) to try. The second title has a webtoon adaptation currently running on both Copin Comics and Tappytoon.
