Reviewed at CH 19. Normally this might be too early for a review, but since this is an adaptation I think these problems I have with the story will only get worse. Overview Feel kind of bad about this one. I think it has very good potential but it's quickly squandering it. It has a strong start with good comradery and good character personalities. As the story progresses, we see that the nobles are nasty hypocritical gods to the commoners which poisons the otherwise good story. The only saving grace would be if there was some rectification or struggle for change (there has yet to be any). Let me just say this: the story is told like "yeah Hitler was a bad guy and all, but at least he was vegetarian" or something. Art Fairly decent to good, I would put it at the mid-high end of general manhwa art. Generally solid colors with a flat shading style. Story Overall this story starts out pretty strong; the MC has strong, likeable qualities and grows in a healthy family environment. The author does a good job of letting the reader feel the same sense of mystery that the MC feels about magic. And we get to see his growth and endeavours in this regard. The MC works hard and success comes in big waves but also stops abruptly as the MC hits very clear walls in his learning. But for me, this is mostly where the fun stops. We get a little taste of how the world works fairly early on in the story, but it hits full force when the MC begins to work for a noble family. The good part of this arc is the MC's friendship with a noble. We see strong growth for this side-character, overcoming his lack of genius by hardwork. He develops a strong friendship (comradeship?) with the MC. The other parts of this arc are rather nasty though. We learn quite a bit about the how the world of commoners and nobles work. While it's faily common for stories to depict commoners to be at the mercy of the nobles, this one does it very harshly. They are treated like livestock, like insects or bugs, by everyone. Commoners can be extorted, beaten, sold into slavery, and murdered with absolutely zero reprecussions for the perpetrating nobles. Everyone, and I mean literally everyone, treats this as merely a fact of life, like breathing or eating. An example, the MC is sentenced to execution for befriending a noble child. This is already a bizarre setup and the follow-through just makes it worse. The child and his sister defend the MC as if this thing is normal. As if you were pleading with your father to buy you a pet. The sole reason they defend the MC is because they like him, not because they think his execution is wrong. This is where I lost all hope for this story. Nearly every character is irredeemable. I would guess you thought the side-character who befriended the MC earlier seemed kinda nice. Befriending a commoner and defending him too, a stand-up guy. But you know, he was going to kill the MC too. There are other examples of this, and I think worse ones to come. I don't want to drag too much of the novel into this review (since this isn't a novel review), but this is an adaptation. I haven't personally read the LN, but people say these problems only get worse. The nobles are unrepetentant, and even double-down on their extremely cruel treatment. And let me be clear, I have no problem with the story depicting these characters this way. The only reason I hate it is because the story treats it as normal and uses it as a part of its foundation.
