Love or Hate

Love or Hate

Haesoo is a cynical writer of a romance column, while Joowon, his former stepbrother, is a famous actor. The two go way back - thrust together when their parents remarried, their relationship is far from simple. Brothers? Soulmates? Friends with benefits? Or nothing at all? Theirs is a delicate balance between lust and loathing, dating and breaking up, irritation and infatuation. When the mysterious photographer “K” takes an interest in Haesoo, events begin to spiral out of control. As the lines between art and reality become increasingly blurred, what direction will this story take? Cheap romance? Sensual erotica? Or something much more twisted?

"Hate Mate" has nothing to do with siblings - thank g**. I almost got the feeling that "Love or Hate" was being reduced to the MCs being stepbrothers..

--------------------------------

Similar to Haesoo (Love or Hate), Subin (How to Hate Mate) is figuring out how to love someone (properly) by living through a messy crush-almost-lover-type thing. Same same but different.

In my opinion the art and especially the storytelling can basically give one the same level of satisfaction for both - almost. Although "Hate Mate" has more trouble keeping the best possible order of events intact to make it comprehensible while keeping it interesting - it tries too hard at times.

Whereas "Love or Hate" puts a lot of emphasis on intercourse to work through emotional turmoil and the like, "Hate Mate" uses not-so-friendly meetups and pissed off banter to get the point across. It managed to weave in some profound ideas into snappy dialogue with a hell of a lot of swearing; "Love or Hate" plays it cool and immerses you up to your last braincell into it's toxic environment full of drama and angst.

As both titles suggest the common denominator here is the relationship, the thin line, between love and hate, how those words can sometimes be used interchangeably and how you sometimes just can't do jacksh*t about it being the one or the other.

So, both Toons can be considered fundamentally different in their delivery and execution but they still overlap significantly. They felt refreshing but might not hit the spot for everyone. If you enjoy following along as some pretty boys figure out their ambiguous emotions.. you will probably like both to some extent. I enjoyed them a lot.
