The Summer Hikaru Died - Reviews

BL isn't the focus of this Manga, rather than that, it's the horror/thriller aspect that truly makes it shine. It really takes the Skin-walker genre to another level, though it seems that this 'Hikaru' is madly in love (or rather obsessed) with Yoshiki. 

After discovering that his friend isn't his friend, Yoshiki is in a constant state of fear, and regret. It is hinted that he had a crush on Hikaru - unable to accept that Hikaru isn't here anymore - he accepts the thing that took over Hikaru's body. 

The art is really nice, it perfectly translates the constant eeriness emanating from 'Hikaru' and the village. 

Not to mention this shit be goofy asf sometimes 💀

Great, promising premise so far (only 8 eng unofficial translated as of May 21). Contains horror with lovecraftian influences. BL isn't the main focus, more so interpersonal relationship between the two main characters but still feels well-considered and heartfelt. Looking forward to where it goes from here!

An excellently written horror manga with a distinct eerie atmosphere conveyed through the sketchy art style and off-putting angles. It makes great and frequent use of horror motifs as metaphors for small town queerness. Every volume thus far truly spectacular in terms of pacing and story telling. I'm interested to see how the metaphor will be expanded as of course monster equaling queerness can easily become muddled or outright homophobic - but the mangaka proudly bestowing the series as "horror BL" makes me inclined to trust where she's planning to go. My only mild gripe is that the characters could be a bit stronger.

Really interesting BL with Junji Ito vibes to it!
