Tennis is bloodless boxing- once a match begins you are alone on the court, facing not only your opponent but yourself. Both these stories illustrate this clearly, giving us an MC who is dedicated to improving their tennis and reaching specific goals in the sport, albeit for very different reasons.
Happy! is less realistic in tone than Baby-Steps,and finds comedy both in tragic situations and secondary characters. That doesn't detract in any way from our attachment to Miyuki, her family and her friends.
Baby Steps on the other hand showcases a more realistic world, without extreme riches or poverty. Ei-chan's journey is perhaps all the more compelling as a result.
