A cute manga that includes a compilation of short stories from Nakamura’s high school life as he tries to befriend Hirose, his unrequited love. Nakamura is the typical shy closeted boy who has no friends, while Hirose is the complete opposite and is very outgoing and close with others. It is a heartwarming and comical slice of life manga that just made me laugh and smile. I felt that I related to Nakamura in some way because I remembered a bit about my past self through him that were pretty similar in some way lol. The story is also well paced, as I prefer slow burns rather than just getting right into it. The art style is very nostalgic, and the story is just super adorable. It is a bit short for my taste but I think there is another manga that includes its side stories, so I will be reading that soon!
It's primarily a comedy. And even though romantic yearnings play a central role in the setting, it can honestly barely be considered a romance and it's more just about showing the social awkwardness of the character. Not all of the stories were amazing (like, chapters 8-10 were meh-sauce), but I appreciated a lot of the antics and gags in the earlier chapters and I especially liked the role that Kawamura played in the story. I enjoyed the inclusion of octopuses and I found the emotional resolution in the final chapter to be very satisfying, though I'm not sure if the tag "Love Confession" is accurate. There's side-swish hair and beady eyes that remind me of older series like Yu Yu Hakusho or InuYasha. The prancing and some of the affectations also remind me of that style. It's aesthetically pleasing and well-drawn. And works well in showing off the cuteness of characters like Hirose as well as the comedic exaggerations.
