(Review after 40 chapters) The premise and the execution are at odds. At first I was only suspicious (since the English title is much shorter and doesn't include the slow life part), but seeing the title, I'm sure of it now. Basically, we have two commoner children, mc and his female childhood friend. Mc wanted to be a hero, but it was the childhood friend that became one, while mc became a blacksmith, which is considering the lamest profession in the world, just because (but okay, let the author have it his way... okay, we all know it was so that mc could be a big underdog). So the heroine (in more than one meaning) is forced to leave to train and mingle with nobility, while mc is left behind, but he makes a promise to her to get gud and join her later. Well, guess what... Yeah, slow life. Like, dumb mofo, how can you go and make a slow-life story (let me even put aside my personal prejudice against this wet dream of the overworked Japanese) but use the premise of an intense action story? And as you'd expect from my words, the mc doesn't really try hard to fulfill his promise. He occasionally has those "I'm motivated" moments, which the manga shows off proudly, but he wastes 90% of his time otherwise. Like, he wants to become the strongest, so... he fcking works as a waiter and does odd jobs in his adoptive parents' inn. Facepalm. So the story is kind of garbage overall, unless you're really into slow life stuff. Art is okayish. Nothing spectacular. I'll admit the MC when he uses his skills and is drawn in a "cool" way is indeed cool, but that's it. The artist should put more work into the characters because they all look generic (they have this "which other manga/anime have I seen this character in?" vibe, with the blonde (?) pig-tailed tsundere being the largest offender as I think her character design appeared in at least 3 other, unrelated series). The characters are nothing special. I already told you about my gripe with the protagonist who doesn't live up to his own words (in general, take away his special powers, and he's just a loser). The female characters have generic, stereotypical designs and characters. They have no deeper personality in most cases (unless you consider quirks personality). Putting aside the one character who had a crush on MC before the story started, their feelings for the protagonist are very shallow. He just had to call a girl cute twice and help her cure her insomnia to get her to like him. In another case, he had to support a girl emotionally once or twice in a situation she felt insecure about. Oh wow, big romance. I especially find the "oh my gawd, he called me cute" thing cringy. Nothing much to say about other, more minor characters. Some of them are very stereotypical, some are not. Some are funny, some are not. That's pretty much it. Overall, I don't like this. The start of the story is really misleading, and the protagonist is far from charismatic enough. It wasn't just after 40 chapters, but already after some 15-30 chapters that I found myself struggling to keep on reading, thinking that maybe it'll get better, and that since there are over 100 chapters available, it'd be a pity if I didn't enjoy a story that had a lot of chapters just because it had a weak beginning. Unfortunately, it just didn't get better in particular.
