So basically both stories involve bad parents and mentally damaged children. "Hide and Seek on the Sofa" gives off a softer vibe because it is based on an innocent kid's POV, while "Efforts Never Betray" is slapping into your face and says "Life sucks, everything sucks, you can't do anything, give up"
