Both manga include a female MC who goes back in time after being executed by the love of their life, the MC tries their best to avoid their previous fate, and them defying others expectations while also gaining the approval of the one they love. The only difference is that The Abandoned Empress' MC doesn't die twice and only once while in Doctor Elise, the MC dies, gets reborn on Earth and becomes a surgeon, then dies again, and with the knowledge she has tries to fix what she did wrong.

Both The Abandoned Empress and Doctor Elise can be read legally in English on tappytoon.com!

Part of what makes The Abandoned Empress and Doctor Elise both attractive reads is what appears to be a kind of story trend in the fantasy romance webtoon scene: a woman reincarnated or reliving their life, usually as a princess, engaged to a prince, or another female who faced a tragic end and uses a powerful connection she knows to avoid living death and despair again. There are a wide set of circumstances in these reincarnation fantasy romance stories out there. But I have found about all of them having some core appeal. I think that appeal is wanting to know their fate as women with knowledge and experiences of an already lived life, usually tragically ending ones. You want to see them with a more fortunate life than they have had before in spite of tragedy and danger.

The Abandoned Empress is a woman trapped in powerlessness but wrestling against a powerful force of destiny lived once before. Her new “power”—if you can call it that—is an ability to make her own fate. The story writing does and excellent job of keeping us guessing how much of her fate she can change while major events move forward eerily close to what she has lived before.

Doctor Elise is a much brighter story. And the main character is essentially overpowered (OP) from her advanced medical knowledge and events of history with political knowledge. The romance part of the story is much more obvious than what may exist in The Abandoned Empress. And though like The Abandoned Empress the main character is avoiding a destiny with the crowned prince of the kingdom the situation is not as traumatic and, therefore, emotionally dire.

Who Made Me a Princess

Who Made Me a Princess

The beautiful Athanasia was killed at the hands of her own biological father, Claude de Alger Obelia, the cold-blooded emperor! It’s just a silly bedtime story… until one woman wakes up to suddenly find she’s become that unfortunate princess! She needs a plan to survive her doomed fate, and time is running out. Will she go with Plan A, live as quietly as possible without being noticed by the infamous emperor? Plan B, collect enough money to escape the palace? Or will she be stuck with plan C, sweet-talking her way into her father’s good graces?!

Although they aren’t necessarily similar, they give off the same pleasant, satisfying vibe. Both stories are about meaningful journey towards changing the fate placed upon a person. In this sense, they are easy to relate to one another. I also suggest Lady BabyIt’s quite similar in terms of themes with both these manga as well!

BlackSummerDays BlackSummerDays says...

Both are very different takes on the isekai genre while still holding a similar appeal, Elise is someone originally from the world she reincarnates to now with experience as a doctor on earth while Athy is a korean girl reincarnated to a world she's only vaguely familiar with due to the novel. Elise's primary appeal is in its romance and her developing relationships with the people around her like her family and colleagues, while Who made me a princess is alll about athy's bond with her villain of a father and her hilarious personality.

They're both fun to read for both vicarious and entertainment purposes, there's something gentle and thrilling to be found in both. They both reincarnate at different ages too so it's very interesting to see how they go about things in different ways! Also I love the art in both.

Instead, she starts her new life as the antagonist, right at the moment she's being sent to live in a nunnery–for the rest of her life!

Both have strong and smart female lead characters. Both have more knowledge/skills than they should in subjects that one wouldn’t expect from them. Both stories have standoffish or mean male characters that the main character is supposed to marry who seem to soften because of her. Also both stories are not set in today’s time period but rather in the past.

The Reason Why Raeliana Ended up at the Duke's Mansion

Poisoned to death by her own betrothed?! Eunha didn’t wake up in a novel’s story just to get killed off again as an unfortunate extra! To change her story she needs a cover… 6 months pretending to be the fake fiancée of the novel's male protagonist, Duke Noah Wynknight. But will this cold-hearted, angel-faced demon of a man really help her avoid another ill-fated ending?!
