This is a story about mummies. But it doesn't call them mummies--it calls them chousha. But considering the origin story of the chousha involves the mummification techniques from Ancient Egypt, they're basically just a more invulnerable version of mummies. You see, they're not able to be killed by anything (not even nuclear weapons) other than the lighters and matches of people called cremators. And there's something special about these lighters. Not just anybody is able to use them. Only those who have some kind of awakening in their hearts are able to ignite them. This is a story about Jippouin Tsukushi's awakening into being a proper cremator, as opposed to just a novice who uses matches. Fe's still in high school, and has attracted the interest of a delinquent girl, but fe's secretly working together with a government agency to take down the chousha that have integrated into society. You see, feir sister had been killed by a chousha because they need to constantly kill people in order to harvest their body parts to keep themselves fresh. We learn that there is an entire underground hierarchy of chousha. It's implied that, other than the dark magic users who originally created the chousha, at this point it's the chousha creating themselves. We know that they are able to bandage up animals and other people to turn them into mindless, subservient chousha. This story sorta had my interest at first, but then I began to notice unexplained holes in the worldbuilding and it started to become apparent how things were being designed so they could create a hero-type story. First of all, it's never explained why the matches Jippouin was using worked against the chousha. Fe wasn't awakened at that point, so it wasn't because of some sort of mystical hidden power fe had, which means that there were weapons the average person would be able to use to defeat these monsters. Which then raises the question of why they stopped at matches and lighters, rather than develop more effective weapons like flamethrowers or grenades (which would still make use of the somehow magical flames). And if the average person is able to kill chousha, then the strategy of having lone cremators fighting them seems extremely stupid. Honestly, even if cremators are the only fighting force available, there are probably better strategies available than sending a single fighter in. The second problem I noticed is that the nature of the chousha is never properly explained. They require physical body parts, so it's implied that they are physical. But somehow they are able to dissipate into mist. And if they are able to take on a non-physical form, then why do they need to kill to refreshen their physical forms? Why not just constantly stay in their misty forms?
