Boukensha License wo Hakudatsu Sareta Ossan Dakedo, Manamusume ga Dekita no de Nonbiri Jinsei

Douglas Ford is a mage who has spent the past two decades using his magic to help others, ever since he became an adventurer at the age of fifteen. Now thirty-seven years old, he's contracted a mysterious ailment that causes his HP to drop whenever he uses his powers and his body is starting to wear out. When his guild unceremoniously kicks him out after his adventurer's license is revoked, Douglas wanders the land alone and encounters a little girl who has been transformed into a giant wolf. He decides to use up the rest of his dwindling life force to change the child back, but when casting the spell doesn't actually succeed in killing him, Douglas finds himself with a brand-new purpose in life - raising his new daughter!

Douglas Ford was once considered the world's strongest sorcerer. And fe never really got weaker per se, it's just that fe became unable to activate feir skills because fe developed a condition where each time fe activated a skill it would reduce feir maximum HP. Obviously, if feir maximum HP ever reached zero, fe would be dead. Fe couldn't effectively complete quests while avoiding using skills, and after many failed quests feir guild license was revoked. So fe wandered the countryside doing odd jobs. Eventually, through a happy accident, fe finds a way to remove feir curse, meaning fe can start using feir over-powered abilities again. Fe meets a young girl, Ravi, who was abandoned and cursed and has no family or home to return to. Since fe's always felt a strong moral compulsion to help those in need, fe takes it upon femself to bring Ravi along with fem on feir travels. They go from McFadden to Addington. And from there to Floria, and then to Milton and Balzac. In each town, they meet people and have adventures. But it's not just mindless wandering--fe has some things which fe needs to resolve with the hero, Alan, and there are circumstances in Ravi's past which put fem in danger, so Douglas needs to protect fem and eventually remove the source of the danger altogether. Stories about Douglas's exploits eventually make the newspapers. Ten years ago, Douglas loved the adulation fe received, but now when fe's fawned over it makes fem feel uncomfortable and fe runs away. Perhaps with age, fe has learned humility. Fe's not very good at reading people and doesn't feel that fe's a good parental figure for Ravi, but fe wants to get better. And wants Ravi to be happy. [Reviewed at chapter 13]
