Bokura no Hentai - Reviews

The art was beautiful and the character development was beautiful. Personally this story brought me a lot a pain as a trans person and my jealousy of them. More than the that what the characters go through is heart wrenching and the story is realistic with it ending with them characters not exactly living happily ever after. Please be careful if you are easily triggered or depressed or going through something similar like trans dysphoria, a rape survivor, or family abuse. I don't know how you deal with things but personally for me I feel less depressed reading/watching things that are relatable or funny.

This story talks about body dysphoria, rape (does not deal with it in a good way though), and adolescence. Please read the extra 42 chapter. That's all it was a good book.

This is advice the author obviously did not follow.

This manga is a convolution of characters with a sad background. Even minor characters who have no impact on the story get an episode that reveals their entire backstory (which isn't much since they're not important). And that leads us to think: Well, obviously this should be useful later on, right? NO! It's completely useless to the story, it's just an attempt to draw tears.

But it does not matter. What matters is: does the author know how to develop these characters? NO! All character exploration is done through expository flashbacks or a monologue that manages to be even more expository than the flashback itself. But over time, these monologues are not only expository, but also redundant, condescending and unnecessarily complex. It may seem counterintuitive to be condescending one moment and unnecessarily complex the next, but trust me, the author has pulled it off.

Just when I think I understand the character's psyche, the monologue comes along and destroys my whole understanding of the character, but not in a good way, like you're subverting expectations, but confusing. They are confusing and pretensous. And it gets to a point where these monologues become melodramatic, which is quite an achievement considering one of the characters was raped. I found it easier to understand the characters by analyzing their actions than through these monologues.

And as if the characters weren't complex enough, there is a love conflict between 6 people(If you don't like the love triangle, you'll hate this one). In the end, one of these 6 gives an opportunity to another of the 6 after realizing that she will never be with the one she likes(one od the 6). and you might wonder: but does she like him? like friend? yes, but lover? very debatable. It's more like a consolation prize, which is pretty rotten and not in line with how the character was developed. And there is not a very strong reason for her to choose him, because if the reason is that he already likes her, there is this 4 character(one of the 6) who also likes her. It's really stupid, Jesus.

The romance at the beginning is interesting, but it never goes anywhere, even at the end of the work we don't know the conclusion of some relationships or if there is a chance of them happening.

And another frustrating thing is how the plot goes in a circle several times in the work. There are too many false conflicts and resolutions for my taste. One moment they make up and the next there's a time jump and it's all bad again. The author just didn't want to progress with the story, but just mumble the character mental state.

The art isn't good, most of the time it's just bland, but there are those rare moments when you can't tell which is which.

There are even more problems, like pacing and characters, but I find it difficult to talk about them without giving spoilers, but believe me, it's not that good.
