Blue Giant - Reviews

I feel like a manga about jazz can easily be overlooked but I urge you to give blue giant a chance. Though at first glance you may assume it would be boring, but Blue giant is honestly one of the most exciting mangas I've ever read. I grew up surrounded by music due to my parents influence and jazz was my mothers favorite, when I was little I never understood why. Jazz just seemed loud and inconsistant. As I grew up I understood why she loved it so much. Jazz is so emotional and carries your soul with it's spontanious rythum and the loud inconsistancies that once repelled me from it now draw me in. Even someone who is not a fan of jazz should understand passion for what you love, and at it's core that is what this manga is, Pure passion.

What a great idea, the plot is also quite interesting. But it's so unbelievably sad that you cannot hear the protagonist playing. An audio medium cannot be understood in a visual medium so that is why I'm giving this a 7 and waiting for the movie. The manga although very pretty is not enough for my JAZZ itch....

Now you see, this is why this type of manga series would need an anime adaption is because I am not able to god damn hear what the main character Dai is playing like it felt in my head that he was only playing “epic sax guy” the whole time I’m seeing his performances. I mean the art and character development was decent. Dai does seem like an ambitious young man who has a goal to becoming a proper jazz musician and plays basketball in his free time. I really this type of character development in a coming of age story like this one. In the manga world, we almost ever see a high school kid performing a saxophone solo, so this is a refreshing change from the pile of mangas I usually read. If you don't mind not hearing the music, read this manga; nevertheless, if seeing the characters play instruments with no sound bothers you, I suggest you search for anything else to read.
