As soon as I saw the title and title page, I was expecting puppets to come to life. And while that does indeed happen, some other stuff that I wasn't expecting also happens. It's all based on the brother's notion that it's actually the puppets who control the puppeteers. There are two twists at the end: the one about Jean Pierre and the transformation in the final few panels. The Jean Pierre twist was something I expected and it was alright enough, I guess. I appreciate how it's not just randomness and is actually revenge for what had occurred earlier in the story. The final twist was entirely unexpected, but it also feels very tacked on and nonsensical. I suppose it can be explained away as "magic," but that type of explanation is never very satisfying. It's also nice knowing where the puppet from Junji Ito's animeplanet profile picture comes from--it's Jean Pierre.
