Both series are about a girl who leads a mediocre/sucky life, until one day she stumbles upon a world of magic that she was never aware of. Also, both series combine elements of fantasy with the main character's love life.

Both Alice 19th and Fushigi Yuugi have the same type of plot feeling to them.  The series are filled with magic and adventure as the male character protects the female lead as she is trying to figure out her own path.

Both series are about a regular school girl who discovers a world of magic and is guided by a small magic "pet" throughout her adventures. Also, both have that cute mahou-shoujo feel.

Alice 19th and Madoka have very different plots, and even tones - but what struck me about the two is a very similar theme (that I won't go into without spoiling). Madoka is definitely the better of the two, but fans of one would likely appreciate the other.

Genkaku Picasso is WAY better, but both titles follow a protagonist who has the powers to enter people's dark thoughts and change them for the better.
