AI07 - Reviews

The depth of the trust between Buya (a.k.a. AI07) and Amy felt like it would've been better had it been fleshed out over a longer period of time. It functions okay as a one-shot, but the climactic emotional scenes don't hit very hard because we don't have time to get to know the characters or develop an investment in their bond. It also feels odd that there have been search parties actively looking for the clone-cyborg for two years straight. Wouldn't people have given up by then? Or assumed that fe'd somehow slipped through their net?

Anyway, the characters are entirely lackluster. The design for the evolved form was pretty neat--it reminds me of The Terminator--but the personalities and motives and character arcs are either nonexistent or very bland. The artwork is decent enough. The faces and arms and running legs can look a little awkward at times, but the backgrounds are nice and it's got a gritty vibe that matches the tone of the story pretty well. The story itself feels ham-fisted, where the transitions between key action points don't flow together very naturally. I can sorta appreciate the overcoming-adversity-to-protect-a-loved-one idea (a classic idea), though it definitely could've been executed better.

This was weird and quick. Too quick to care about the characters. The art was peculiar and not bad, but not good either. The story is really simple and fast paced. Sure there's more behind what's happening, but the main point of the story is "we care about each other no matter what": this means the story is really character centered, but as I said it goes too fast for me to care about them, so at the end I get nothing. The intention of the story is good and there's nothing really that bad about it to give it just one star, but I can't give it more than two.
