Ai no Su e Ochiro!

By coincidence, the low-class gossamer-winged butterfly Tsubasa catches sight of the son of a distinguished tarantula family, Nagumo Sumiya. Saved by his words, Tsubasa holds admiration for him. From a single glance, he wants to meet him, and he enrolls in Sumiya’s school Seihoku Academy, where only the elite gather. However, hardships due to his low-class awaited him there. On top of that, Sumiyaーhis only hopeーtosses him aside, saying, “I hate gossamer-winged butterflies.” Tsubasa had believed that he would be acknowledged and becomes depressed. At that time, he becomes trapped in the web that Sumiya had laid, where he’s injected with an aphrodisiac venom and is held down…?

I read this manga in spite of the warnings because I love bug-boy characters, and this is one of the few manga I've stumbled upon that focuses on bug-boys. The premise and setting aren't anything terribly original- low class protagonist gets into a fancy boarding school for the upperclass, and has to deal with classism and discrimination, while falling into a will-they-won't-they with a disillusioned upperclass student. The only thing that really makes it unique is the fact that the characters are all half bug, and their class is determined by their species. The real struggle I had with this is the fact that the protagonist not only gets raped by his love interest, but feels guilty for 'upsetting' said love interest when he calls him out for his actions, and then THANKS him for raping him because he was able to experience sex at least. Like. Yikes!!! And while the rest of the series is untranslated, as it goes on you see the love interest refuse to commit to the protag while simultaneously getting jealous and mad at him if HE hangs out with other guys or shows interest in people besides him, so that's fun. Honestly the most intersting thing about this manga is the protagonist and his situation, and then some of the side characters. The story itself isn't anything too original, as stated, and the main romance is just deeply unhealthy without ever realistically addressing the main love interest's abusive behavior or challenging him to improve as a person, so it's hard to really root for them to get together. It's rarely a good sign when you'd rather see the protag wind up with any of the side characters than the main love interest...
