When a member of the Student Council humiliates a friend of hers Utena challenges him to a duel, and he accepts only when he sees she possesses a rose seal ring. She soon discovers that this is no normal duel - it's a bizarre and ritualistic battle that the Student Council regularly conducts. In fact when she wins, Utena finds to her considerable chagrin that she gets to have Anthy Himemiya, a rather docile student, as her 'Rose Bride'. Reasons you might like Revolutionary Girl Utena...

asuraasu asuraasu says...

Psycholgical themes and symbolism abound in both of these great series. Revolutionary Girl Utena focuses on Utena Tenjou, a student at a prestigeous academy who, after defending the girl known as Anthy Himemiya from what seems to be a lover's spat, finds herself trapped within a dueling game, but the winner of this game owns Anthy as their bride. After School Nightmare follows Ichijo Mashiro, a man with the body of a woman, who joins a special class in which he and the other students all find themselves in a shared nightmare, exposing the students weaknesses and fears.

Both these series are notable for their approach to character development and psychology -- no one is as they seem initially and the characters have a fantastic amount of depth to them. Both also address gender roles and have different elements of genderbending to them; Utena wears the school's boys uniform and tells everyone that she wants to be a prince, while Ichijo himself has the body of a woman and doesn't know exactly how to define himself. It should be noted that Utena has a bit more comedy than After School Nightmare, but it's far from the main focus.

Themes of love, betrayal, miracles, inner demons and sacrifice can be found in both stories, and overall, if you like the symbolism and themes of one, you'll like the other -- both are fantastic, and I highly recommend them!

Note: This is specifically for the anime version of Revolutionary Girl Utena, as the manga is quite a bit different.
