"I am, in fact, one of the dead." So says Acony, a rather mischievous girl, upon her first meeting with protagonist Motomi. Newly moved into an ancient apartment, how will Motomi handle Acony and all the bizarre residents?
This was really cute. The plot is not really complex. Motomi spends a couple of years at his granpa's, in a weird, alive, out of time and haunted building where he meets a number of weirdos of any kind. The main plot is about what happened to Acony, what she is, why she doesn't age and what happened to her mother. I liked that twist about Acony's mom at the university, but what happens next with her mom feels a bit disappointing. This main plot is closed by chapter 17, while the next chapters are unrelated events, except for the last one. Those unrelated chapters didn't feel completely odd, because chapters dwelling on the fun life of the building were already done during the story. I just felt that was a little unusual, but not wrong or something. I like the art. The characters are peculiar, and they add to the weirdness of the building in their own ways. There is not much of a plot aside from Acony's past and Motomi's involvement in it, but I just love the atmosphere and the interactions between the inhabitants, and the moments when anyone's story is put in the spotlight. Not everything has an explanation, and science coexists with curses, ghosts and monsters. I enjoyed it, but I wish there was more. Or maybe it's better to leave it this way and let your imagination guess what Acony would do next.
