Maybe Meant to Be

Jia Han, a 32-year-old freelancer with no work, is tired of her parents nagging her to get married and finally move out. When she runs into her childhood friend, Mincheol Jin, who is also feeling the same pressure from his parents, she blurts out that they should just get married to solve both of their problems. Little did she know he’d accept her suggestion, and she suddenly finds herself thrust into marriage.

Updated: December 31, 2022This manhwa is the best thing to read at the end of the year! I was here when it was less than 5 chapters long and I already felt like it would slowly shape up to be my absolute favorite. I wasn't disappointed. If you enjoy romance with hilarious cringy scenes, a cuteness that makes you squeal in excitement, and a build-up that rewards you for your patience, this is THE romance manhwa to read. The FL and ML are both socially awkward and somewhat inept for their age group, as they are currently around their thirties but are still unmarried (which I think is a big no-no in Korea?). They see each other and come up with a pact to get into a contractual marriage to prevent both their friends and families from hounding them about their own lives. I'm a big fan of the contractual relationship trope if done well, and my friends, this manhwa was done wonderfully. They slowly fall in love with each other but in such an atypical way that it bothers more on realistic rather than fictional despite their situation. The FL slowly falls for the guy and makes such bold moves that I'm left crying and begging on the floor for more chapters. Like, go get him girl!! Even if he doesn't necessarily know that you're getting him, I support you!! And the ML. Man, maybe this is a me thing but I love socially awkward but capable MLs who love deeply but don't necessarily stick to the normal conventions of romance. He's a gym buff who shows his love awkwardly in such a sincere way.  Their romance shouldn't 'work' per se but how each interaction, each revelation shifts them closer together every chapter is so skillfully done that you never feel like it's too forced or the pacing is off. The exaggeration of the characters' facial expressions and the spicy things they go through their mundane lives help liven up the scenes so nothing is too repetitive. I also enjoy the author's inclusion of other characters so we can see that our protagonists have a life outside of each other and they're all the better for it. And although this doesn't have smut or anything of the sort, the kiss scenes and the moments where the characters fall for each other are better than smut. Way better. It's the feelings they show okay! It's the feelings!  If you haven't read it, you should. If you're a fan of Wotaku Ni Koii Wa Muzukashii, this is the step after that and AAAA I loved that too but everything I wished that had, this manhwa did better. I highly recommend this and I can only wish for another manhwa that can approach the level that this one has brought me. Reviewed at Chapter 52----------Old Review: February 27, 2022Pretty cute story with an interesting build up! I don't have much to say since we only have four chapters out so far but I'm loving the dynamic between the FL and the ML. The romance here is refreshing because I do enjoy a slow burn romance when they're already in a contractual relationship, especially if both parties are very different from each other. The art and pacing so far are pretty well done and although I still don't feel giddy at any of the scenes, I think we'll eventually see them around sooner or later. I'll be back for an updated review!  Reviewed at Chapter 4.
