A Stepmother's Märchen

The iron widow, the spider widow, male hunter, the witch of Neuwanstein castle, the embarrassment of noble ladies....... These were all the words used to describe the Marchioness, Suri Pon Neuwanstein. Despite receiving such criticism from the world, she raised her 'children', who were unrelated to her by blood and were old enough to be called her siblings. And finally, on the day of the first son Jeremy’s wedding, she felt that all her hard work had tied all the loose ends together. But she had been terribly mistaken. After hearing the message requesting her to not attend the wedding, she got caught up in an accident and died while leaving the castle. But when she opened her eyes, she woke up on the day of her husband's funeral, seven years ago. I refuse to suffer any more. I won’t live as I had in the past a second time!

The reason I'm hating on this story is really more of a personal preference then a professional one so, if you find this manga interesting I encourage you to read it regardless of my review. The plot is kind of interesting all in all. Now my main problem with this story was that I didn't like the kids. They were just a bit to 'wild' for my tastes and I don't think even the death of there father is a good enough excuse for their behavior. They had there good moments but I just found them to annoying too care overall. I also didn't think then fit in well with the image of noble children. Another reason was that I couldn't stand the plot because the backstory was really vague. They said that the protagonist basicly spent a whole lot of money and lived carelessly to help her family but they don't explain why!? Are we really just supposed to swallow that bundle of illogicalness because they said it was and I quote "to protect the children" Like bitch are you high!? How is that in any way going to protect you kids!?😑 So anyway in this life she swears to not go out on a limb for them and instead says she's only going to live selfishly and everything magically gets better for her. It entered major mary sue territory and usually I wouldn't care but this time it just made me more annoyed at the plot. I also didn't like how the male protagonist was only a year or so older than her eldest. Like how is he supposed to be a father to you kids!? Also aren't you over twice his age mentally? What a perv.

There are quite a few comics similarly involving a person's death causing them to go back in time--giving them a second chance, but with their memories about the future to help them. Most of the ones I've read have the death be the result of bad life choices, and have preventing their death be a primary motivator. Not so with this story. Shuri's death seems to have just been a fluke bandit attack (not caused by any mistakes on her part). Instead, her major regret is not being invited to her stepson Jeremy's wedding. So the second time through, she's determined to be a better, more caring stepmother to her four children--the type of stepmother they'd want to invite to weddings. She's still basically a kid herself, being only sixteen. Though she had already been married to Johannes for a few years before he died and left her in charge of the Neuschwanstein family. Not that this was normal or anything. People definitely looked down on her for her age and inexperience and were certain she would fail and run away from her responsibilities. Last time around, she was able to scrape by and fulfill many, if not all, of the basic necessities required of her. But this time around, she can make it look easy. It's fun seeing her surprise the adults around her with competence and wisdom years beyond her apparent age. And it's heartwarming seeing the children slowly begin to trust and rely on her, and even care for her as a mother. And it looks like we'll be getting a reverse harem as the story continues, so I can look forward to feeling that who-will-she-choose anticipation that we all know and love. [Reviewed at chapter 22]
