86: Eighty-Six (Light Novel)

The Republic of San Magnolia has long been under attack from the neighboring Giadian Empire's army of unmanned drones known as the Legion. After years of painstaking research, the Republic finally developed autonomous drones of their own, turning the one-sided struggle into a war without casualties-or at least, that's what the government claims. In truth, there is no such thing as a bloodless war. Beyond the fortified walls protecting the eighty-five Republic territories lies the "nonexistent" Eighty-Sixth Sector. The young men and women of this forsaken land are branded the Eighty-Six and, stripped of their humanity, pilot the "unmanned" weapons into battle...

"A war without casualties."  The shining Republic and the war with the Empire of Giad are not what they seem.  Set in an ulternate universe during a WW2 like war, battles are fought with autonomous units called Juggernauts, directed remotely by a Handler via telempathy made possible by a dog collar. Major Vladilena "Lena" Milize takes up the position of Handler One for the "Spearhead" squadron. Comprised of elite veteran Juggernauts, piloted by Eighty-Six, they fight no matter the odds, in the "War without Casualties."  Shinei "Shin" Nouzen, a.k.a. The Reaper, captain of the 86 Spearhead Squadron, keeps a box of makeshift dogtags for all the comrads they have lost but will never be remembered by the governmant. Rumor is his past Handlers died of suicide after linking with his mind.  Stripped of their rights as human beings, the Colorata were emmured in internment camps in the 86th District (their namesake). Dehumanized by the Republic's ruling class they were not allowed parsonal names and considered subhuman.   I was honestly surprised I was the first to review this light novel on A-P. I'm not much into war stories. All the war and ect. in the news all the time makes me want to seek out fantasy and comedy, not more war. But I kept seeing this book and the anime popping up everywhere so I checked it out. After chapter three I was hooked. Things get out right spooky and I can't wait to get my hands on volume two. I hope the anime does it justice.
