1 Plus 1 (Soru)

This romance starts with some bumps in the night, that turn into some truly irritating bumps in the day, that then turn into Sung-eun literally bumping into the reason for all the noise: her handsome and charming neighbor, Eun-sung. She quickly finds out that the private student representative has a somewhat questionable reputation, but that doesn’t mean she shouldn’t do her duty as the kind neighbor. I mean, they are literal neighbors, after all. She hides her true feelings to him, and the two grow so close that it isn’t long before Sung-eun has to wonder if maybe Eun-sung...is also hiding something from her?

Warning this review may contain spoilers -1 Plus 1 by Soru is a Korean series published by Lezhin, it follows Sungeun Lee and Eunsung Lee in their romantic endeavors and how they become close friends to then become partners. It is a very melodramatic and over the top take of a university romance but it did have me intrigued to start with. Now let's get started with this average review of an average series. STORYThis webtoon gives me hints that it may have been rushed heavily to fit deadlines and this is where the story suffers greatly. A lot of things were addressed early on in the series (in the first half) which weren't developed later on, including a second love interest for Sungeun who was introduced and hardly had any impact in the latter half of the series. There was also the incident with Yunjeong which as far as I can tell was never resolved, this issue being the one that occurred in the arc following chapter 13 - within the first quarter of the series. The pacing was all over the place and most things felt as if they were rushed or forgotten about when it came to the later parts. That being said it wasn't a complete lost cause, the build-up of the relationships of the main/secondary characters for most parts seems to be executed well enough. You got the gist of it per se. My personal favourite is the friendship between Jaehyun and Hyejin which seems to be developed gradually and didn't feel as rushed as the main pairing or even Eunsung's relationship with Dogyung. ARTThe art, I can't really fault it, it was good. The character designs were basic but to be fair it is a romance manhwa set in a university, not much more can be done with that and the scenery shots are done well enough with the context. It's pretty, and that's good enough. CHARACTERSCharacters and the story go hand in hand where the story was rushed, it means any character development was also quite rushed. The two MCs I found myself not really caring for in the end, you find yourself annoyed with a lot of their actions and end up being confused about how we got to the final scenes of the webtoon. Dogyung is a character that needed more development however her arc was rushed right at the end, just so we could have some conclusion on that front. There was also a whole bunch of minor characters that just don't seem to play much of a part, including one in Sungeun's group who I don't believe even appeared properly as a character at all. Again this issue of these characters being introduced and not used and utilised hindered my experience with this webtoon and honestly, I'm a little disappointed. In conclusion, I personally wouldn't recommend this unless you need a quick romance fix or just want to try a university romance rather than the high school ones we're used to. Everything was way too rushed and all over the place for my liking and I recon the series could have used with more chapters to actually conclude the story with most loose ends worked out. Thank you for reading. Yui
