AH, Colossus and Last Guardian, that's what I was thinking of bringing up before, more AAA games that have a truly distinctive style. People say it hasn't aged well but it has for me. It's brilliant stuff. For some reason this post reminded me of that. Dunno why.

It's definitely still, Japanese > Western games for me.

PlatinumGames has retained a pretty distinctive style over the years to me.

To be honest, I don't really like Rockstar or Naughty Dog all that much either. My gaming catalog is pretty much either older games, or games from Nintendo these days. People can bash them all they want, but they definitely have most of their games stand out in terms of visual style.
I just remember the glut of shooters in the last decade, with a bunch of sci-fi environs in brown landscapes (jungles for the second half of the decade, tbf), and it feels to me like there was a lot of wasted effort on textures instead of good art direction to make the game stand out from the rest. Meanwhile, Mirror's Edge still looks fucking great to this day.

UO1: Related to the cel shading discussion: I think more games should fuck off with attempting "photorealistic graphics" and just go stylised all the time. It ages so much better, and it helps differentiate your games from others.

I think some games should retain those photorealistic graphics; they would be a product of their time but at least in this day and age of fancy graphics, they could still have some graphic longevity compared to yesteryear. I'm thinking of westerns, some cities, maybe the jungle but vibrant and green, not dirt brown like you mentioned above. Or something shiny and chrome with excellent lighting, which just makes me think of Crysis which was like graphics porn back then. Or hell, even an adventure game as that's all about faces and shit but that needs massive work to do well and not be creepy and janky as shit. Good graphics like that, photorealistic, can really drag you in by the eyeballs.

Yeah, the Last Deus Ex Uncharted of Us Redemption games are starting to get really really boring. The only one where I really agreed with how it was stylized recently was Spider-Man, and that was only because all the suit choices brought so many other styles to the table.

That reminds me, I haven't played it in a while and there's been DLC :o

I thought I was looking at Ultimate Spider-Man for a second.

Graphics porn games sure look stunning on release, and I guess computational power has petered out enough the last few years that photorealistic graphics will hold up much longer now than before. The age of proper graphics porn seem over, though. New engines from Epic or id Software aren't met with fanfare and readied drool buckets like before.

I just find it hard to play 3D games from around '05 or thereabouts because it's ugly enough to bother me, but not old-ass 3D games like Thief or System Shock 2.

Funniest thing to me. Those companies are always wanting to stay ahead of the curve in terms of how real graphics can look, when it's the stylized games that will age the best as time goes on.

Plus who needs more realistic games when you have Mad Dog Mccree, most realistic game ever. Really ahead of its time.

The true red dead redemption

Bit older stuff, but here it goes:
Is liking The Last Jedi the popular or unpopular opinion around here? While I can understand and accept some of the complaints about it, I loved the movie, thought it was brilliant writing that fantastically critiqued and/or subverted many of the tired tropes of the old movies, and my only real complaint was that goddamned red curtain in Snoke's chamber.
I was happy see that shitty curtain burn...
I would complay more about the movie.
The bad: All the feminist nonsense starting with token Asian fat chick up to the purple haired condescending woman "hero". Ass-pulled broken mechanic to destroy enemy ship by ramming it, making any large ship useless and any other strategy exercise in futility.
The good: Killed Snoke. He shouldn't be there to begin with. Subverting usual story-line based on sequence of plans usually go and fetch.
Not sure about: I'm not sure about the explanation Kylo Ren about his turning to the dark side and his relation to Ren. It's weak, nonsense. If the next episode is not going to subvert this by showing there is more to it, it makes this bad, very bad.
At the time I did enjoy the movie. My unpopular opinion is that The Last Jedi is better than The Force Awakens. The previous movie was just bad rehash, this at least went for a new story. Even character of Ren was overall more likable or less annoying in The Last Jedi.

All mint stuff is great as long as it's not something mint flavored.

Mint flavored ice cream SUCKS

Mint flavored chocolate SUCKS

You can effing PAGE me if you want to engage in fisticuffs about it.

The world is so full of variety that you would be surprised - never say never. I 'usually' don't like mint chocolates but once I came in possession of a rare expensive box and it was empty before I knew it! All I will say is that I had withdrawal symptoms for a day or two!

Sounds like you're eating the cheap shit Turkey, my friend. Try some real mint ice cream that's made with proper cream and real mint flavouring instead of sugar, sweetener and air, and you'll change your mind.

Okay so.
I will die on the hill of Mint Ice cream. Is Y U M
When it's the good stuff.
[[And honestly even the 'not so real' gimme Mint ice cream ]]

Mint chocolate is... well..... A vast array of 'yum' to 'vom'
Low quality choccy in general is so icky.

It's "mint vanilla" milk, and while it sounds horrifying, I just kind of tastes like melted mint ice cream. Maybe a slightly melted shamrock shake from McDonald's. The brand I tried was called "Trumoo" but I guess it's a New York tradition, from my brief research. Chicago just got it because we turn SS9 trash on St. Paddy's day here and put mint in everything. Mint flavored donuts, liquors, caskets. We do em all, chief.

Simply putting a sexual theme in a show doesn't make it "mature and grownup". Seeing supposedly adult shows with meaningless nudity everywhere to make sure it gets an R or MA rating gets really annoying really fast.

I don't think that's all that unpopular of an opinion. It's pretty obvious when nudity and sexuality are awkwardly crammed into a show just for a sake of having a bit more street cred. It's pretty rare of graphic sex to be well used because unless it's a core part of the show or important to character development then it's almost always tacked on. Even good shows fall into this trap.
