Space Adventure Cobra

Episode 1
Johnson seems like a loser in a sort-of sucky future. It's all jazzy and based on the sixties, and yet people are trying to get isekai'd into interplanetary romance. Except he was Cobra all along!

I'm loving all the psych backgrounds, groovy camera changes, and neo-noir mood in this. The rest of it is cheesy, but not very engaging. Two-fisted tales and space adventures should be more fun, but we've 30 more episodes for it to improve.

You know, this looks pretty damn amazing for something made for tv back in 82. The twist was a bit of an open secret, but I still dig the idea of faking out some kind of origin story, so won't have to see the dude bumble his way into becoming awesome.

And his housebot was actually Dural from Virtua Fighter, which is pretty dope in it's own right

Episode 01

This is visually more trippy than it has any right to be and I love it. At least the animation side, for a pilot ep it's a bit meh.

Not sure why they went into all the effort of setting up such an overly complicated setup and backstory for a salaryman who just wants some excitement in his life turning out to be some personality-less macho space pirate hero thingy. How do you even not notice that your arm isn't human for 5 years?

2:

He truly is anime Duke Nukem isn't he? All the way down to rescuing scantily clad women from evil aliens. It's just purely dated id top to bottom and that's alright with me.

I guess complete intangibility doesn't preclude one from falling to a shot of concentrated psychochad energy.

Episode 02

Glad to see this in this anime as well all the villains seem to suffer from the terminal 'can't fucking shoot for shit' disease. This seems to be the case for most retro anime I've seen.
Best thing about Cobra is probably his character design. Not really fond of him and how he seems to breeze past every challenge. Why have a fun personality when you can just have a supergun for a hand and then just dedicate an entire episode to it.

Lady Armaroid is far more fun tbh.

3:

I suppose it was unavoidable that we get a bar scene where our badass action hero takes out a group of thugs with hair-trigger anger issues he accidentally offended.

The best part of this one was the one entirely unneeded scene with the entirely unneeded OP insert to Cobra falling of his bike.

Episode 3
Summercum Cum is one hell of a porn name, I'll give them that.

Armaroid Lady is still the best, but Crystal Boy is a cool-ass villain.

Golden Kamuy time!

Episode 4
Cool camera work, and Jane throwing Cobra into the jewellery store was fun.

Space law doesn't hold back. Fall through a store window one minute and minutes later you're being prepped for a gladiator style execution held by M. Bison. No time to even check the one of the prevalent security camera's footage to find out some broad threw you in there to begin with.

It's good to see that Cobra being lady's man that doesn't flinch doesn't flinch when comes to applying true gender equality.

Hey, hey, I'm hopping along on this thing, don't mind me.

Give a bounty hunter backstory to the intergalactic doofus, oh yeah, I think I could get into this. Cobra's a loudass idiot, but the hyper animation is really doing so well to keep up with his energy. The soundtrack's not so bad, either.

But I agree, the pilot was a lame way to introduce Cobra as some kind of space hotshot. "Bored salaryman running away from the Pirate Guild" makes for a much better story than "bored salaryman suddenly remembers he's a space pirate." None of my dream sequences end up the way his do, I'm so jealous.

I need more anime with city pop soundtracks in my life.

Getting hit by Cobra's Psychogun looks pretty gruesome. Makes me wonder if he's got a psycho-everything, since his body's obviously not human.

The man also has such a way with the pop art ladies. Especially Jane Royal, I like her, she's pretty badass. Crystal Boy's pretty cool too, I already think he's got the best Pirate Guild boss name yet.

The retro-noir shading and crazy animation tricks are really winning me over, so it all balances out with Cobra's overall macho man dumbassery. He's funny! I laugh at him in most of the parts they're telling me to, so that means the humor is working. He still looks like a ten year old boy's ideal image of a Real Man, but he's just enough of a clown fuck-up to temper that.

I'm actually surprised the show isn't episodic like I thought, but I think the most surprising thing for me is that Cobra's one-piece costume isn't actually a one-piece costume.

Man Darkwing Duck sure has fallen on hard times. Or perhaps that's his and Alf's love child.

Based Cobra flexin' his knowledge on the laws of thermodynamics in the heat (laugh) of battle

That last scene between the sisters was, um. Well, I suppose the Westermarck effect wouldn't apply to their situation anyway.

Episode 7
Tarvage: I only need to kill Cobra to succeed.
Also Tarvage: Imma run after Armaroid Lady!

I'm starting to see why Crystal Boy holds him in disdain. Also, Armaroid Lady was the one holding up Jane. A real MVP, that one.

RIP Duck #1.

More fridging. Yayness.
