DTAB – Damn That Anime Is Bad​

One of the most prestigious, esteemed, intellectual, populated by attractive dank individuals and magnanimous institutions ever formed on Anime Planet. A history that dates back to 2012 or sometime ago in an older time period, an old age where people frolicked watching good shit like a bunch of people that don’t have time to watch crap. And then the works of Ryuji Masuda was unearthed from an ancient tomb of unknowable unknowns. The works unearthed? Popee the Performer and Funny Pets, two series that began a new age, a golden age where cultured people gathered together to watch crappy anime and talk shit about it. This age was the dawn of shitposting for Anime Planet and the dawn of crappy anime, and the beginning of DTAB.

How it works:​

Each Sunday at 4pm EST (GMT-4 but don't trust me on that), we gather at the temple of DTAB in Discord and through SyncVideo or Rabbit if SyncVideo craps out on us or Caracal if it's on the Tube and someone else has it and can host- we watch the crappy anime in question and comment on it throughout in Discord. The link to the anime will be provided on Sunday.

Simple, right? Show up at the stated time, get the link to the vid room and you’re off to the races for a better tomorrow!

Picks​

Picks are announced ahead of time for most weeks, just in-case a pick of yaoi, excessive manly violence and flex nut badassery, 80s titties, excessive gorn a combination of the above or any other such graphic content comes up, you can just skip the week and come back next week if it’s not to your taste, so you don’t show up for nothing. Or some picks may be rewatches because you’re already cultured enough to watch such a pick and we're required to do rewatches now and then.

A general rule but not really is that an R or 18A rated pick wouldn't be on 2 weeks in a row, so it would be something adult, then something for all ages, then adult and etc. This is liable to not happen.

Picks are also crap, so they'll either be so bad it's good, so bad it's bad or so bad it's a sin against nature itself. They also may have totally awesome soundtracks while everything else is crap, but that's an 80s thing.

Time wise, we mostly do OVAs/Movies under 90 minutes, and not full series or OVAs that are over 90 minutes total. Sometimes this may change due to our beloved El Presidente Thrawn because he follows no rules but his own. God bless him.

Funny Pets

It had no funnies nor pets. This is blatant false advertisement. 1/10

 

Funny Pets is some lit shit, and it has some cartoony existential dread that is often missing from anime. This is a mythical world, free from the constraints of the "real world", and the show uses that, and its CGI assets, to great creative effect. The characters are all unsympathetic moral wretches, happy to screw each other over for the pettiest reasons. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Of course, Popee is still the superior work, with a better cast, a more adroit handle of the slapstick comedy, and the shorter runtimes make the episodes more frantic in pace, which is only a good thing in concentrated comedy skits like these.

Even better than the first episode, what with the scatological terror and body horror parts. They really gave their all in the fucked up creativity department this time. The only letdown is the stinker of a final episode.

To be quite frank, one needs a significant amount of intellect to understand Funny Pets Plus (Or Funny Pets 2 if it fancies your jimmies). Compared to the exemplary controversial and yet masterpiece (heh, but not quite magnum opus) first season, it encapsulates the psychological, metaphysical, physiology and to be fair, a great amount of disciplines are portrayed to a very deep extent that challenges the human mind and the existentialism of what humanity is. Why, just earlier today we watched an episode where the Moon performed controversial experiments on a corpse, eventually wearing it like a second skin like Buffalo Bill and performing ritualistic, almost satanistic dances and singing a song that can only be likened to yet again, deities of the evil sort. As divinity struck and destroyed the world around them (A metaphorical alegory to the ruined, decaying world of ours today and a subtle reference to early 20th century Russian literature), music exploded out of the music player in the pool enacting the creation of life a la The Dawn of Creation and evolutionism in a combination of artistry and nature.

The sheer diversity of mature subject matter ensures that kids wouldn't understand and adults would be sickened but those who are enlightened can tell what the author is portraying, how all these themes relate to the human psyche and the disturbing displays are a metaphor for humans themselves and the depths we will go to. Truly part of the golden age of anime and an evolutionary upgrade from the first season.
