This is really unfortunate. I just really can't defend someone looking at 2D kiddie porn.
And it would have been so easy to just say "I saw one non-erotic bit of art once and followed based on it, and then didn't very closely watch my feed."
I've made similar mistakes, suddenly finding gross shit in the feed. But that passive-aggressive defensive attitude displayed...

I dunno man, I draw the line at someone fapping to kids, fictional or not. If you tell me you're into erotic art of children in sexual situations, then what else am I really supposed to think other than the fact you in fact like kids in a sexual way? Stay the hell away from me, but that's just my personal opinion.
Yeah the art goes before any in-setting context.
Sometimes it's like "this character is 13" but is pretty much illustrated completely the same as the adults, so I disregard whatever claim there is from the author, same as when the tiny child claims to be a thousand years old.

Honestly, I think people like fictional art like that for a lot of reasons. Often simply for reasons like 'it's cute and fictional' or 'something about the fictional character appealed to people'. I just don't ever think the answer of 'why someone likes a fictional thing' is directly tied into 'because they definitely like the real thing'. I don't think people who like fictional incest like real incest either, same with honestly any weird thing online.

I feel weird putting myself in this position because it doesn't do anything for me either, but I feel like loli/shota has become the 'frontier' for morals where people care a lot about an image anyone could draw from their head but don't care a lot about real violations. Like, if you get into how Oda from One Piece has helped two real life pedophiles get back into the industry with no repercussions, hardly anyone gives a damn... but shock and horror at the fact someone drew a completely fictional piece of erotic art.

I also do know there's a significant amount of CSA survivors who become interested in lolishota because it helps them with catharsis with their own experiences. I've talked to some of these people. Do I think these people are dangerous? No... they're just people experiencing fiction that recreate their own experiences, and have messed up feelings about it.

A lot of people, especially in fandom circles, who create 'dark' messed up art are survivors of something themselves. I think they end up being pretty vulnerable parties to take potshots at, so they're always in the forefront of my mind.

I get what you're saying, I just have such an insanely hard time understanding and imagining that part with CSA survivors and have never even heard of that before. I am in no way saying we should ignore real life incidents at all and they are obviously more serious, I just can't help but still find lolicon/shouta pretty disgusting though of kids getting rammed. For me, violence is a lot easier to separate and weird out there fetishes like tentacles or guro in hentai which is so far removed from reality. But lolicon/shouta is that one thing for me that hits too close to home for me, that I have an insanely hard time separating and giving it a pass. My brain just cannot do that and think of it as healthy in anyway. I personally have not had a very pleasant time talking to people who have this fetish. I still respect your opinion though. I just feel like to some extent media has some influence it exerts on our lives. I firmly don't believe it has zero, because there's the whole thing about bad behaviours/stereotypes being normalized in the mainstream that always bugs me.

Anyway, I didn't mean to ramble.

No, I get what you mean.

I think for me I see it as similar to how violence can be enjoyed like... mentally, there can be a healthy separation there, but it's also understandable if someone is just. disgusted because it's understandable how it provokes disgust. I guess it matters where you spend time, I've been pretty enmeshed in discussions with trauma survivors re: fiction a lot, and it's. complex for understandable reasons, I think.
I know a lot of CSA victims are either totally put off by it or develop an interest in recreating it, and there's arguments around that...

And as someone who likes reading about fictional abuse, I can understand, because there's a similar divide in other communities of 'survivors'. 'Avoid reading/writing about unhealthy relationships at all' or people who are really attracted to that kind of subject. And, I can get where other groups are coming from on this because when a topic is so 'avoided' by mainstream society it can feel, validating? to read examples, even if not good examples, because it feels like these threads get ignored a lot of the time or these things are 'nonexistent' to most people and stories

It doesn't help that there are a lot of creepy people in the anime community who will advocate for irl law changes or talk about Japan's age of consent in a fucked up way (hello MAL, hello 4chan). A healthy separation between reality and fiction is super necessary when engaging with fiction because I have seen people say fucked up things about real life minors way too much

I don't think the influence is zero, but I don't think it's 1:1 either I guess

Like, as an aside, I actually personally find the creator of Made in Abyss creepy and disapprove of the way he inserts his kinks for underage characters into a work that is pretty mainstream. I don't think that's a good thing to do. But I also find myself, sort of... feeling like he gets more air time for his issues versus the trio of Oda, Shimabukuro and Watsuki and I think an issue there is Made in Abyss creator's obsession is 'obviously creepy' even if he's done less harm than Oda, Shimabukuro and Watsuki have.

I guess I have complicated feelings about this because I'm like, man predators with good public images really get away with this shit wholesale over people with creepy, weird personas. And I feel like people are less likely to believe or continue caring about people who have good images who do bad things.

Well all you can really do is assume with that kind of information. Having fetishes that are only seen as appealing in the 2d realm isn't all too uncommon you know. There are people that prefer to get it up to drawings over flesh and blood people. That said, the weak cover up feels even worse than just openly declaring your degenerate tastes.

I loved BECK. It starts at a 10/10 and stays at a 10/10 all the way through to the last few episodes, where it drops to a 9.5/10 due to some unnecessary drama shoehorned in near the end. So no I wouldn't say it gets any better. If you were expecting something like NANA you're going to be gravely disappointed, since beck is actually an anime about music AND drama, most of which is really good, though a different kind of drama from nana. It's not as overly tragic or romance focused. I felt nostalgic watching it even though I'd never seen it before, it holds that feeling of youth with it better than most anime I've seen.

Honestly I think it did what Carole & Tuesday should have done. If you're going to have an anime about drama and music, nana is too far in the drama direction, and C&T, though lovely, is too far in the music direction, having no other aspects worth mentioning. Beck, I feel, is a perfect balance of both.

Huh
@RascaI Curious question, by any chance did you see Beck dubbed, cause I feel like one of the few people whose seen it dubbed. The English actors from Funimation even dubbed the songs, which is a huge part of the reason why I enjoyed it. And I for the love of God can't understand why people would watch it subbed to begin with. Just saying. :frustrat:

I did! I loved the dub, it was really good IMO.

I saw it all dubbed on a Much Music (Canadian MTV pretty much but they did actually play music). It holds up decently but I'm still be a sub purist at heart so I probably wouldn't watch it that way regardless.

Its become hard to like the Ahiru no Sora anime since the author came out that he's not a fan of how Diomedea has handled the animation. Sport anime, at least the modern ones, feel like they need a competent level of animation. And from the few anime I've seen from them, it feels like Diomedea is one of the bottom of the barrel studios. At least that's my impression of them so far anyway.

DAT: This video is super interesting regarding the cultural landscape of Japan and its effect on anime.
And yes it mentions that Yuasa anime.
It really does make me wonder what sort of effect covid will have on the industry in the future in terms of culture, because it will likely inspire stuff.

Honestly, I kind of wonder... because I feel Western society has been fixated on pandemics, apocalypse, etc for awhile now.

I know the specific pandemic-zombie genre hasn't been as popular in Japan, but because that genre has been active for so long it's hard for me to imagine much innovation...

I guess personally I'd be really interested if the theme of social isolation during these events was highlighted more intensely, or social isolation as a theme in general but that's just my own personal desire :p

(also a very interesting video)

Funnily enough the filler episode of DBZ that I watched yesterday makes this almost make sense, since the fanservice for Krillin's random girlfriend was so absurdly in the face that it's hard to think of it as TV for children even by Japan's standards.

Dragon Ball Z is an anime targeted at children. It does not contain erotic content.
 Suuuuure.

I always forget honestly, that Krillin had a girlfriend that wasn't android 18. Dragonball Z is definitely all about fanservice though for sure, GOKU BASICALLY SPENDS MOST OF THE SHOW WITHOUT A SHIRT, JUST SAYIN.

Dude needs to be introduced to vanilla Dragon Ball

There's also numerous moments featuring Goku's flaccid baby dick.
