Book Discussion

Anyone here a Anita Blake fan? Laurell K. Hamilton is a pretty awesome author... if you're not opposed to vampire/supernatural stuff.

I read a lot of stories on wattpad too. Does anyone else here like to find stuff to read on wattpad?

hey cas ,
have you ever heard of brian lumbley's necroscope series brilliant vampire series tho these vampires are nasty ones !
for nice vampires i recomend anne rice vampire chronicles youv prob seen 1 of the 2 movie adaptations "interveiw with the vampire" bloody brilliant film and true to the book and "queen of the dammed" terrible adaptation awfull film but the book is amazing

interveiw with the vampire is the first book and tho the film sticks to the book it does leave some stuff out but tbh u could just watch the film and then read the second book "the vampire lestat" if you do that DO NOT then watch queen of the dammed , read the book instead, treat the film as a failed 1shot reboot and bin it, lol
vampire chronicles arnt a gory type of read anne rice ,who if im honest is a massive influence on my creative writing style, goes in for an emotional journy type thing

anyhoooo

as for me il look up laurell k hamilton as im a big fan of vampire lore, and vampire stuff in general

The thing with the Anita Blake novels is they basically turn into porn. By about the fourth book, she's a sexual vampire that literally has to have sex every so often or she'll just rape the first person she sees. It's just an excuse for her to have sex with her male harem, but I quit reading the books when she was getting double penetrated by a couple of vampires. I'm not a prude or anything, but at that point I'm better off watching porn.

Really good SF book. The second volume is also very good. Solid science, twists that are unexpected yet logical after the fact. Also a very nice study of Chinese society and general condition of humanity as a species. 9/10.

Oh - don't read anything about that book before reading the book. Easy to spoil since it unfolds so nicely. You have no idea what is going on and reading even the cover might spoil some stuff.

Fuck me, The Way of Kings is a freaking good book! Michael Kramer's narration isn't bad either.
This is scratching my particular itch good!
And it manages to frame bleak and depressing settings in a manner that isn't too bleak. There's still sunshine in the world, just very lacking for those particular people.

Still got 7 hours left. Been cruising through this thing for a while now.

Anyway, reading Finnegan's Wake again...

Oh, and don't read Red Rising by Pierce Brown unless you are heavy into space opera that is disconnected from any sense and overload you with drama every two pages. I read both books in series in two days, so it's not terrible but compared to 3 Body Problem... well it's like comparing 1ply toilet paper to 3 ply one. Both will do in need, but...

You sound like you need someone to read this here, so you can bounce plot points off of.

I must admit I have not read all of them yet. I finished Guilty Pleasures and The Laughing Corpse and Circus of the Damned recently and I enjoyed them... Now I'm worried about the direction of something I was really enjoying though... :crying:

Guilty as charged. I would gladly have someone discuss with me the books and the direction next volume might take. My wife terribly slow reader. She is still trying to get through Seveneves. Since December. By the way, Seveneves is overhyped. Just a bit, but it's not as good as reviewers would like you to think.

hey cas and zet

after reading what you guys have said and looking online, it sounds like the first 3 books atleast might be a good read so i shall check them out

did you guys check out anne rice,s vampire chronicles yet ?
if you dont wana start the whole series she did do a couple of stand alone vampire chronicles that dont need tobe read in order
vittorio the vampire is a compleat stand alone and a rly good read (medium thickness novel as i call them so 400 pages)
marius blood and gold is also fairly stand alone as is Pandora
pandora is my fav of the female vampires in this series tho lestats mom is also kinda hot
, dont be put off,, anne rice, does not do sex scenes, tho she does write about love alot, love between imortal beings that have no need of sex
tho actully marius and pandora do "join" with each other on occasion but thats all they do as everything down there is essentialy dead
anne rices vampire sex is the exchanging of blood between 2 vampires
actully the lore and back story shes built up over the years is exellent shes won countless awards and many of the vampire chronicles hit number 1 on the bestseller lists
and the best thing about the chronicles is that shes finished them , shes brought it all to a close
she said she dont wana die and leave the chronicles unfinished
i dont what that close is yet as iv still got 3 more to read well 2 to read 1 to listen too
(big fan of audio books)

....did you guys check out anne rice,s vampire chronicles yet ?

The author's name does ring a bell with me. I looked Vampire Chronicles up and I know I've heard of Interview with the Vampire (it was the first title on the Vampire Chronicles list I saw.)... I'd been meaning to check out some of her work... I just had not gotten around to it yet. I did see Queen of the Damned the movie. I assume the movie is based off the Vampire Chronicles novel with the same title because the second novel has the name Lestat in the title which is the name of the male main character in the movie Queen of the Damned (the movie was okay... but I'm sure the book is better... ) I'll check it out.

In general when I read romance, most of what I read is not innocent platonic love. However, that is not to say that I haven't read and enjoyed novels that didn't have any sex or implication of sex in them and I don't like it when it goes overboard. What matters most to me is the plot. (I'm sure that's the case with most people who read a lot though.)

the queen of the dammed film is,,,,,
if veiwed as a film in it own right and forgetting about the books , a good couple hours of entertainment
if viewed as an addiontion to the books , a compleat debarkle its terrible

queen of the dammed is the 3rd book in the series the series order is :

Interview with the Vampire (1976)
The Vampire Lestat (1985)
The Queen of the Damned (1988)
The Tale of the Body Thief (1992)
Memnoch the Devil (1995)
The Vampire Armand (1998)
Merrick (2000)
Blood and Gold (2001)
Blackwood Farm (2002)
Blood Canticle (2003)
Prince Lestat (2014)
Blood Paradise (Forthcoming)
and theres also
Pandora (1998)
Vittorio the Vampire (1999)
witch are more stand alone
shes also done another series called Lives of the Mayfair Witches
witch has tie-in to the chronicles towards the end

anne rice has a fairly romantic writing style and the romance between some of the vampires is quite deep and profound
the books for that would be pandore , armand, and to some degree marius bloood and gold
oh and also vittorio
tbh vittorio was one of my fav's especcialy the part with vittorio falling in love , hope that isnt a big spoiler

just found a vid on youtube of annerice talking about vitorio
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtiJsSPM2YE
anyway hope that helps
grendel

nb almost forgot
the necroscope books by brian lumbley
they are gory vampire horror unlike the romanticised vampire's in the chronicles
i nvr managed to read them all as they where kinda hard to get hold of but the 6 or 7 i did read had no person to person romance tho i do remember a sex scene in one of the later ones between 2 wampyr
the wampyr are a parasite sybiote slug that joins with whatever life form it can find and it has shape shifting powers
the wampyr sex scene basicly consists of one being inside the other !! nothing unusual there right , wrong
thjey rly mean inside the other like totaly inside, his whole body inside hers , it rly was kinda freaky , it is certainly not erotica

Dude someone stole your shift, period and semicolon keys?

Anyway, just read The Water Knife by Paolo Bacigalupi. Solid book. Very cyberpunk in a refreshing way and without usual cp tropes.

no they didnt steal them
its just that noone taught me the use them.

wen i first joined the site i had a fairly in depth bio explaining about my lack of grammer and about my mom dieing from cancer right after id started in rehab

unfortunatly i had to change it to a less detailed one
why ?
because one of our members thought it was funny and so copy n pasted parts of it to another forum to take the piss out of me !
i found it by accident after seeing one of those internet security shows where they tell you to google your own screen names
thats also the reason why i didnt post in the forums here for like 5 years

i suppose i should make a post in the introductions page and explain some of that stuff i guess

Finished The Way of Kings, and it's freaking awesome! And oh does this book do twists so right!
I have an intense urge to pounce right at the next book, but I'm following my self-imposed rule and starting one in a different series instead. Second book in the Night Angel Trilogy this time.

I loved the Vampire Chronicles when I read then in high school. I haven't gotten around to some of the newer books, but the core part of the series is great with a lot of rich historical detail. She's certainly done a lot of research into history to write some of the books and in part some of her books inspired me to learn more about certain parts of history. I think the series lost its way a bit when it crossed over with her witch series and that ended up being what was supposed to be the climax for both series, but that doesn't change how great some of the individual books are.

-Interview with a Vampire and The Vampire Lestat are classics and must reads for vampire fans.

-Queen of Damned is pretty good and it actually makes for a decent conclusion to the series.

-Tale of the Body Thief was entertain and hilarious, but doesn't really match the tone of the rest of the series.

-Memnoch the Devil is weird and I fucking loved it, but again, it's a very weird book where Rice is trying to work out her relationship with the Catholic Church so it's not going to be to everyone's taste and that's cool. It's not an essential read, but if you want to see the devil's take on creation and other biblical events, then take a read.

-The Vampire Armand tries to recapture some of the magic of Interview and Lestat and to some extent it succeeds. On it's own it's a nice portrait of a certain in history and it certain makes Armand out to be a sad and somewhat pathetic character.

-Blood and Gold much like Armand goes back to the storytelling well of the first two novels and it works. I like it a bit more than Armand because Marius before this book was a bit more mysterious whereas we already knew Armand's personality pretty well before his book. Plus Marius is mostly set in Roman times, which is something more interesting to me.

After that the series started getting involved with the witch stuff and I wasn't as big of a fan of that. Those books weren't horrible, but kinda meh.

I lost my taste for her after she started writing her Jesus books. I tried reading them, but they were really bad. I apparently wasn't the only one that thought so because she's returned to writing about vampires with Prince Lestat. I haven't read it yet, but I plan to.

no they didnt steal them

That's good

Damn. Still if you have a moment of a free time look up how to spell properly, will improve reception of your posts and emails a ton. And/or install Grammarly browser plugin
https://app.grammarly.com/
It checks the stuff you write online and tells you how to fix it most of the time. I use it and I actually improved my English that way.

i suppose i should make a post in the introductions page and explain some of that stuff i guess

Nah it's good. Maybe consider adding a short signature to your posts along the lines of "I know that my interpunction and grammar suck, working on it" or something. Most people won't search the forums to see if you posted an explanation somewhere.

I'm at the half of Lord of The Flies and I find it underwhelming in every way. Prose is bland, descriptions are not vivid or descriptive but rather basic with a low effort at being poetic, and the characters are standard stuff as well. I guess I could applaud it for not portraying kids horribly as many things tend to do, but not making anything interesting with em' either prevents me.
