Anime-Planet Secret Santa 2021

Could you please post them in the Secret Santa forum here, thank you :))! That way others can see your recs too :drinking:

THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE <333 Can't wait to join the fun too hehe~

https://www.anime-planet.com/anime/given ( a very emotional way to deal with the loss of a loved one. Plus the music is awesome)
https://www.anime-planet.com/anime/golden-kamuy (action. A bear trying to kill you and cultural differences. This one is a bit bloodier than the others though.)
https://www.anime-planet.com/anime/interspecies-reviewers (One of the most talked-about and memed shows last year. There is Prostitution but from what I remember nothing was forced.)
https://www.anime-planet.com/anime/kuma-kuma-kuma-bear (cute girl trapped in a cute video game. and cute bears)

Thank you so much for the recs~!
And more is better! (๑>ᴗ<)و Won't have to worry about anime searching for a year LOL

For now, I'm going to start with one from each person's list:
Saga of Tanya the Evil @Darkshadow2905
Heaven Official's Blessing @AnnaSartin
Mo Dao Zu Shi S3 @JordanJas

I might throw in a movie or manga too if I feel like it! Super stoked for this year's recs :duck:

To my Secret Santa:

I'm going to start watching the two Tokyo shows you gave me (Revengers and Ravens) tomorrow. I was planning on starting them tonight, but some personal stuff came up and I won't be able to start them. Just to let you know that both titles will fit on my new Bingo card so I'm going to claim both of them once I finish watching them. Thanks!

Dear Santa,
I'm done with my second recommendation Heaven Official's Blessing. And you, my dear, owe me so much sleep and maybe a new soul.

First at all funny story: I had no idea it was made by the same author as MDZS. I just went telling my friend how I enjoy this one more than MDZS and she was like "oh yeah, the author improved so much." Then awkward moment pretending I already knew they have the same author.
While I read some chinese manga in the past - mostly cultivation related stuff and I'm fighting with a 3000 chs novel, I'm not so well into chinese animations, so my only comparation object was the first season of MDZS. It seems I have a thing for it now. These days most anime try to compress too much into 12 episodes series and they end up being too fast paced and easy to lose in details.
Heaven Official's Blessing takes it's sweet time, not rushing in the story. I am surprised every time when I watch a new series and I don't hate any characters. And here I don't really hate anyone.
I have a hard time with names so I hope I don't mess something here. The main couple is just so sweet.
To be honest I forgot almost everything I wanted to say because I am to sleepy so I will stop here. I loved the series so much and I can't wait for the second season - when I will have some time I will go for the novel too.

One last rec left: Stargazing dog (manga)

Feeling a bit better, so I opted to start last night with https://www.anime-planet.com/anime/the-misfit-of-demon-king-academy and get a ways through.
At first I had trouble getting it to come up in my search, as entering the Japanese title resulted in 0, it turned out a chunk of the English name is cut out on here and had to enter a different string, and it was something like "The Misfit of Demon King Academy with an extremely long title inserted here trying to set a record for longest titled anime and no one could possibly remember half of this or finish reading it".

It was a given I'd enjoy this, the main tags align with what I like. I did 5 eps and haven't disliked anything. My attention is fairly fixated and there's no way I really have trouble with names, I know it started with an S... but the girl with the magic eyes would be the type I like, so that's a plus. I noticed on the main AP page the reviews at initial glance are scored fairly low, somethings about OP chars, but I enjoy that component (or there would be no point to begin with). I always strive to be that extremely OP/rich char that could do virtually anything. Mabinogi was game I achieved that in many years ago.

Planning to either watch all 8 remaining eps before bed, or else finish Saturday night as there are some movies I wanna try and have work in the morning.

Given that I have barely gotten to any anime this year, from the first 5 eps so far I am feeling that interest return, especially to more of a binge state of getting through 12 eps within 2 days.
Though I should be able to play FF14 end of next week again and this momentum may go out the window and on temporary hold for a few more weeks xD

Dear Santa (here's a novel for you),

I was going to wait until I finished the last two picks from you before making my next post. However there are some things I have to get off my chest about Skinny Kids with Giant Forheads Tease one Another. I mean, damn that was some character design. I don't know what to bring up first, the noodle neck supporting these bowling ball heads or the fact everyone's the 5head meme incarnate. Apparently receding hairlines start young in this universe. Like real young, couple guys walking around with less hair then my 80 year old grandpa. Maybe I got it all wrong though, maybe they are so powerful that the hair is literally trying to run away from their head. The next Saitama's in the making over there. I mean MC is doing push up's with them toothpicks arm, so maybe in a couple decades. Ok Ok...I'm done bullying imaginary balding kids. I'll refrain from starting in on the boy that needs to get a job making log cabins with those beaver teeth he's got.

Now that I got that out of my system and believe me I've been saving it up since I started this show, I'd like to say....well done you absolute beautiful human being. The short version; I enjoyed the more wholesome take on teasing that didn't cross the line into creepy stalker obsession or some weird S&M fetish, or something that comes off as incredibly toxic.

I typically am the one to scoff anytime someone mentions romance in anime, because I think the medium has an extremely poor track record when it comes to romance and even when it does get some semblance of what a healthy relationship would look like, it's so idealized it's completely unrecognizable. And that's what I appreciated about this show. There are little things, that are seemingly insignificant, but inline with what you might see in real life. Take for example the first time they talk on the phone and that neither wanted to be the first to hang up.

This is something that is not only relatable but common place. Heck, when I was a teenager I myself had a friend who I'd be in the same situation with. To the extent either our parents would make us hang up or one of us would legitimately fall asleep on the line. That friend is now my wife, so there is an authenticity that I feel with this anime that I don't necessarily with many others. Of course it's not wholly realistic for reasons that would require a spoiler tag and I'm too lazy for that, but the parts that are, are enough to ground it and keep it from incredulous territory. And kudos to to Yuuki Kaji. . He's never had a stand out performance to me, but some of the ways he delivers lines as Nishikata in this show are absolute gold. In particular the low tones he uses for disappointment can be soul crushing.

Well done indeed. 9/10 As a side note I will be watching the second season next, so while I will endeavor to do so, I may not get to 22/7. Really it's kinda your fault though ;).

I just finished watching Death Billiards.
I liked it a lot. I'm definitely gonna watch Death Parade soon. The white haired dude is pretty hot. It was pretty intense.
Not sure if I'll watch Bungou Stray Dogs or Pretty Boy Detective Club next first, but I'll try to watch both of them before christmas.

Sooo santa, I've noticed most of my manga recs are with a tag "adapted to anime" so I'm guessing that my request: "manga only" was hard for you. I know I'm right =P

Anyway I've been cheat reading and watching recommended Altair: A Record of Battles and it remind me: Kingdom, and Legends of Arslan, and a bit of Yona of the dawn to the point I thought I'm watching a spin of one of these, but with turbans. Different types of head covers seem to be a major part of the story. I really enjoyed music and backgrounds. Pacing was not a strong side, since there is a lot of side stories, biographies, politics woven inside that sometimes is just about sitting and talking all episode. Currently would rate it at 6 or 7/10

Since this was a second rec, I would like to check out other options, but I think I'll stall on reading Altair for a while. It's not bad, but since now is a v.busy time a story like this feels really sluggish.

Hello once again, Santa,
I have just finished the second gift, Erased. Before starting it, I had no clue what it was going to be about, despite it being in my Want to Watch list already (I put it there because it was one of Aoi Yuuki's top anime), but after it became clear that it was a time travel anime, I grew anxious, since those are very rarely done well, at least by my standards. However, just a few episodes in, I was hooked. The characters were nice, the story made sense, and it looked good visually as well.
However, then came a backstab. Erased spoilers to follow:
"Surely, the teacher can't be the killer." I thought, thinking it would be more obvious than murder mysteries ending with the "the butler/gardener did it" trope. After seeing the murderer and coming back once again, Satoru kept interacting with the teacher the same. Relieved, I kept watching, waiting for someone suspicious to appear. And then it turned out that it was indeed the teacher. Facepalming so hard I broke my neck finished watching it, which was a huge task in and of itself, as the last couple episodes were just boring once you knew who was the murderer.
And, finally, Kayo ending up with Hiromi just for Satoru to meet Airi again, who was not even in high school at that time made no sense to me story- and character-wise.
Erased was a story set up very well, just to blow up in my face. 3/5⭐
I completely agree with this take on ERASED. The story was massively disappointing despite having such a great setup. Granted, that seems to be par for the course for Tomohiko Itou directed anime (e.g. SAO), but I'm not sure if that's really his fault or the source material. Probably both.

I'm done updating the recs list. Trying to keep up with all the late recommendations is too much lol.

To my dear Secret Santa,

I have finished reading the one-shot manga you have recommended to me— Love Log. It was very simple and cute. I liked it.

Also, I have started watching Poyopoyo and I am really enjoying it. Poyo is very cute and by far my most favorite character is Hide. Though I liked all the characters more or less.

I will keep updating you. I wish you good health.

Take Care!

I liked that Kayo didn't end up dating Satoru. There was no reason for them to end up together and he was in a coma for like 15 years, even if she did have romantic feelings for him it'd make sense she moved on.

The weird romantic tension between Satoru and Airi was weird though.

Someone recced Poyopoyo? Your Santa clearly has good taste!

Dear Santa,

Im assuming you stalked my profile, like any Santa should, and you must be wondering why I've barely watched any of your recs. And the answer to that is... I'm lazy :P. I really enjoy the little that I saw from them, but I can't find the right time to watch em. Rest assured I will finish them before Christmas, but it will probably be a binge-watch a few days before the deadline.

Good job with the recs, see you!

I am in this time too!
