Anime-Planet Secret Santa 2021

Hey y'all! I'm super late, but I enjoyed this event a lot last year and was looking forward to it (´;︵;`). Since I missed the deadline, will any kind souls recommend me anime/manga regardless :))? I still want to react with everyone else even if my secret santas aren't anonymous!

Anime, manga, or both is ok? Both
Maximum episode (anime) and/or volume (manga) limits: No limit! Ongoing series are fine too
Tags you don't want: horror, gore, sexual abuse, 4-koma, no animes/mangas that are cancelled/uncertain hiatuses
Other: Huge romance/isekai fan but I'm not afraid to experiment with other genres. Animes, movies, mangas, webtoons-- a combination would be appreciated! I'm totally fine if it's on my stalled or want to watch list. Or mangas I haven't read but watched the anime. If you insist I watch the second season of a show, I'm open to that too. I really like it when shows are nostalgic or wholesome. Excited to see if I get recs :))!
I can send you some in a little bit. Do you want them here or PM?

Santa,

I've finished Annarasumanara. I'm glad you've picked it for me, because as I said, I wouldn't have read it otherwise. And it was worth it.
It has an interesting and melancholic story, pretty much what I like to read. But I really couldn't get used to its art; more than that, the whole strips order and style were somewhat chaotic to read. I got tired of it after reading a few chapters. Kinda had to push myself to read more than one chapter per day so I could finish it in time to start your other rec.
I'm giving it 3 of 5 stars. As I said, the art really wasn't my cup of tea. If this same story was a manga instead of a webtoon manhwa, maybe I would have enjoyed it more.

I'm gonna start Her Summon now, but as I said, I can't promise I'll be able to finish before Christmas because of its lenght.

Dear Secret Santa,
I have finished one of the anime you have recommended to me (https://www.anime-planet.com/anime/koikimo). And I am extremely sorry to say I didn't like it at all. I kind of hated it. And here are some reasons why:
  1. Could the characters be any more one-directional? This is one of the major elements that make an anime extremely boring. I have never seen an FL more confused and lame as Ichiko. Not even Hanazawa Kana's angelic voice could hold my attention towards the anime. The last time I saw an anime this boring was for last Secret Santa. And the anime was Snow White with Red Hair Season 1.
  2. Why the fuck are the adults acting like teenagers?
  3. The 10 years age gap isn't a big deal for me. But falling in love with a 17-year-old, who is still not out of high school, and 10 years younger than me? I don't think I feel very good about the theme at all. How is this okay? Is this a common culture in Japan?
  4. The animation is pretty average. It looks kind of hard on the eyes.

Please consider this as my review for the anime. I have no hard feelings toward your recommendation or taste. This anime was already on my want-to-watch list. So I was gonna watch it anyway sometime in the future.

I see you have recommended me a one-shot manga. Thanks a lot for that. I am gonna go and read that now.
Again thanks a lot for your recommendation.
I wish you very good health. Take care.

I finished my second rec: New Game!
It reminded me of Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid (with the yuri fanservice and whatnot). And I did watch everything from that franchise so it's not exactly a complaint lol.
It was a bit boring in the same way I find all iyashikei shows a bit boring (and yet I watch a lot of them because I never learn and apparently don't mind being bored as long as it's nice to look at) but the last scene was really funny and I'll probably still watch season 2 at some point.
I'd say it was overall a good gift, thank you Santa~~

Since somebody already gave you some nice anime recs, here are some recs other than Japanese anime for you:

Donghua:
Heaven Official's Blessing
The blossoming love between a gentle god and a powerful ghost king. It's beautiful and deserves to be appreciated. Plenty of folks here will back me up on this! (the webtoon is also great and has lovely art)

OEL Webtoon:
Freaking Romance
A love separated by parallel dimensions.

Manga:
Shouwa Genruku Rakugo Shinju
An old man, a loveable crook, and a hot-headed young woman are all bound together by their love of rakugo - for better or worse!

Manhwa webtoon:
Magic Soup
Great fantasy BL for wintertime featuring a chef who thaws the heart of an icy wizard.

Bonus Manga: (because it's completed but not fully translated yet)
Beasts Giving Love
Fantasy isekai featuring a three-way romance between a de-aged Japanese doctor and the ones who rescue him from the hell he finds himself in when he first arrives in another world.

This is a question I asked myself frequently while watching some trash my friend insisted we watch together. I'm starting to think that creators are so used to writing teenagers it has caused some of them to forget how to properly pen stories about adults... in spite of (supposedly) being adults themselves.
:hamster:

Dear Secret Santa,

I've finished another one from your recommendation list: Arte (https://www.anime-planet.com/anime/arte)

I've asked for character development, and this was spot on. I really liked, that most of the characters really developed, not just the protagonists, but side characters as well.

I kind of ignored this when it came out, because I thought that this will be another anime about starting clumsy and becoming perfect, like sports anime. But this was nothing like that.

This was an awesome gift, thank you.

Santa oh Santa..... I swear you are trying to murder my brain. I finished Sonny Boy and really and wondering if you are going to make me think again on my next pick. Decent show but had me hella confused and didn't explain as much as I would have liked.

dear santa, i started the first of the manga picks today i chose to start with https://www.anime-planet.com/manga/her-tale-of-shim-chong i do enjoy yuri but i was sorta drawn to this option cause i tend to get more uninterested with historic series whether they be anime, manga or westen stuff... well unless there is some other point of interest like demon slayer for example.

buuuuuut i'm already 30 chapters in now and i adore the main two girls they are very cute together so far ^^

Dear Santa,

First off, thanks for the recommendations! I just finished BanG Dream and I really enjoyed it!! It was a simple story but done extremely well with lovable characters, smart writing and great music! I might have never tried it considering the not-so-great score it has and the fact that there are so many other music/idol shows out there like this.

I think I'll slowly watch the entire franchise (2 more seasons and 4 movies!!) and I think that says a lot.

Wow, I love how Bang Dream! and Show By Rock! show up as Secret Santa recommendations. Both shows are some of my favorite idol and music anime. I made a custom list for them. They definitely deserve some love especially since the girls in Bang Dream all have colorful personalities.

I used to play the mobile game for Bang Dream and it’s quite enjoyable if you like J-pop music and J-pop cover songs! Yukina’s voice sounds like Nana Mizuki. It’s quite deep, and mature.

Aldermin on the sky - get to the third episode and you get to enjoy some military tactics shenanigans. Not sure how well they'd work in real life, but that's not exactly the point of the show.
https://www.anime-planet.com/anime/alderamin-on-the-sky

Erased - guy traveles back in time to save a bunch of classmates from a serial killer. Good watch, despite the contrived ending.
https://www.anime-planet.com/anime/erased

Saga of Tanya the Evil - isekai except god has it out for the main character. He causes a world war just to fuck with him.
https://www.anime-planet.com/anime/saga-of-tanya-the-evil

Boarding School Juliet - Adorable, really charming, and I've had a laughing fit at a scene in the show.

P.S. Gosick is great.

P.P.S. Love, Chunnibyo and other delusions is great aswell. One of my favourite shows, actually.
I love all 4 of those. Great recs.

Thank you so much for the recommendations! <333 I never heard of Aldermin, Magic Soup, and Beasts Giving Love (the synopsis made me laugh lol), so this was exciting! For the titles I do recognize, I'm super happy because now I have a good reason to start them, yay!

I can send you some in a little bit. Do you want them here or PM?

I suck at explaining plots, but these are anime series & films from your wtw list that I really enjoyed. I know you said you wanted variety, but I hope this is ok... (You have so many good ones that I love on there, I'm trying to restrain myself from recommending 20+ lol! XD )

Hello once again, Santa,
I have just finished the second gift, Erased. Before starting it, I had no clue what it was going to be about, despite it being in my Want to Watch list already (I put it there because it was one of Aoi Yuuki's top anime), but after it became clear that it was a time travel anime, I grew anxious, since those are very rarely done well, at least by my standards. However, just a few episodes in, I was hooked. The characters were nice, the story made sense, and it looked good visually as well.
However, then came a backstab. Erased spoilers to follow:
"Surely, the teacher can't be the killer." I thought, thinking it would be more obvious than murder mysteries ending with the "the butler/gardener did it" trope. After seeing the murderer and coming back once again, Satoru kept interacting with the teacher the same. Relieved, I kept watching, waiting for someone suspicious to appear. And then it turned out that it was indeed the teacher. Facepalming so hard I broke my neck finished watching it, which was a huge task in and of itself, as the last couple episodes were just boring once you knew who was the murderer.
And, finally, Kayo ending up with Hiromi just for Satoru to meet Airi again, who was not even in high school at that time made no sense to me story- and character-wise.
Erased was a story set up very well, just to blow up in my face. 3/5⭐

Dear Santa,

I actually started Ace Attorney and......it's such a bizarre experience so far. I think I have watched way too many serious stuff that I was surprised by the comedic take on things lmfao. I totally did not expect episode 1 ending and it still shocks me until now. I will let you know when I am completely done [I am still on Episode 7 but once I start....I am set to finish so all good]

Also, I thought before sleeping to read the short manga "7th period" and thanks for letting me realize I cannot read shoujo manga anymore, my whole brain cells screaming: "yo teacher take your job seriously wtf are you doing?" I confirmed yet again I am indeed a shounen trash.
