There are both good things and bad things about this anime. The bad being some of the animation and also the really slow pacing. This anime demands a time investment from the viewer that will determine whether or not they will be patient. The good being the music, the characters, and the themes. Its interesting that Yoshiyuki, the artist of Evangelion worked on this anime.
Its true that Evangelion and Hack-sign do have similar psychological themes, but between the two, I don't think that Hack-sign is as strong as Evangelion. Tsukasa's design does kind of reminds me of Allen from D-Grayman, even though D-Grayman's story consistency fell apart during the Japan arc. Tsukasa's character develops towards the end and it feels like payoff.
The pacing is going to hurt re-watchability for this anime, but overall feels like a better "trapped in a video-game" anime than SAO, therefore, 3.5/5.
