Hi all,

Here's a summary of all of the anime and manga tags added since the last announcement. More Isekai themes this time, as well as a number of niche sports/activity tags, character-based tags, and more.

As a reminder, you can post suggestions for brand new tags, as well as anime/manga that are missing specific tags, in the tag section of the forum. Help out by posting missing ones in that section! And remember that you can check out recently added tags anytime by using the "date added" sort on the tags page.

Interspecies Relationship
ANIME | MANGA

These anime focus on romantic or sexual relationships between beings of two different species, such as Gods, Vampires, Robots, Demons, or others. The characters might be humans who are in a romantic relationship with a non-human, or non-human beings who fall in love with each other, such as an angel and a demon, an elf and a werewolf, or different kinds of animals. See also: God-Human Relationship.

Non-Human Protagonists
ANIME | MANGA

These anime feature protagonists who are not human. They may be animals, monsters, catgirls, deities, space aliens, sentient robots or any other fantastical or supernatural beings. These stories may center solely on a non-human protagonist, or feature one who is paired with a human comrade or romantic partner.

Note: this tag is only applied if either of the following applies:
  1. There is one protagonist, or one of a duo of protagonists, who is not a human
  2. The main series' focus is about the non humans

Modern Knowledge
ANIME | MANGA

Characters in these anime possess modern-day knowledge that doesn't exist in the time or place where they are. They may have been transported or reincarnated into another world, or have been thrown backwards or forwards in time where they use what they know to their advantage.

Kingdom Building
MANGA

Characters in these manga take on the responsibility of running a town or kingdom, whether they take control of an existing one, or build their own from the ground up. Typically, these manga focus on the administrative duties that keep civilization going, such as implementing new laws, constructing buildings, dealing with economic issues, engaging in international diplomacy, and acquiring the land needed for expansion through trade, negotiation, or open warfare.

Economics
ANIME | MANGA

These anime focus on economics, showing the inner workings of markets, trade, and business. They may show how economics affects the overall economy, or they may feature merchants and other money-driven characters whose goal is to find new and better ways to turn a profit.

Management
MANGA

Characters in these manga are in charge of managing a small or large-scale operation, such as owning a restaurant or shop, building or growing a town or kingdom, or constructing a world-class dungeon. The primary focus of these manga is the day-to-day operations of how to succeed at their job, whether it's increasing revenue, managing inventory, or improving kingdom morale.

Otome Game
MANGA

Otome games are typically story-based visual novels aimed at women. The goal is to pursue one of a number of love interests, aiming for the best case "Good End" with their chosen love. However, there are usually many branching paths and other endings, including "Bad Ends" where they may even meet their demise. These manga feature characters that find themselves in an otome game setting. They often have been Isekai'd or Reincarnated into the otome game, sometimes as the villainess.

Polyamory
MANGA

These manga focus on polygamous or polyamorous relationships. Unlike Love Triangles and Harems where two or more people compete for the affections of a single person, poly relationships feature three or more people who are all consenting partners in a Romantic or sexual relationship.

Rock Climbing
MANGA

These manga feature rock climbing. Characters may enjoy bouldering in indoor climbing facilities, scaling natural cliffs and rock walls in The Great Outdoors, or prefer taking a more challenging way up while Mountain Climbing.

Scuba Diving
ANIME | MANGA

These anime feature scuba diving: a professional or recreational activity where a person dives underwater using special equipment with a self-contained air supply.

Jazz Music
MANGA

These manga focus on the appreciation of Jazz music, or on the musicians themselves, whether they’re amateurs or professionals.

Impersonation
ANIME | MANGA

Characters in these anime are impersonating someone. They may be twins who switch places, someone serving as a body-double for a celebrity or other person of importance, or a person pretending to be a deceased relative or friend. Not to be confused with Secret Identity, which defines characters who live a double life.

Marriage of Convenience
MANGA

A marriage of convenience describes two people entering a marital union for contractual reasons other than love. For example, to wipe out a Debt, to receive an Inheritance, to gain citizenship, or for some other strategic purpose. Typically, characters in a marriage of convenience have a choice to enter the relationship - even if it's a difficult choice - unlike Arranged Marriages. Unions made for political reasons are a type of marriage of convenience that may also be an arranged marriage, if family members required the union.

Remarriage
ANIME | MANGA

Characters in these anime are brought together due to a remarriage, for example two people who have just remarried, or have become step-siblings. Common themes include the day-to-day happenings of the remarried characters' Married Life, adjusting to becoming a step-parent or step-child, and step-siblings learning to get along with each other... sometimes a little too closely!

Secret Child
MANGA

In these manga, a character is raising a child in secret. The other parent is unaware that the child is theirs, or in some cases doesn't even know they exist. Drama and Child Custody issues may follow when the secret is revealed, and might lead to the parents reconnecting and deciding to raise their child together.

Child Custody
MANGA

The focus of these manga is the contested custody of a child. One parent may have just learned about the child and demands custody, or the couple might be going through a divorce and custody is a main concern.

Character or animal tags
We add these tags to an anime or manga for two reasons only:

1) there are only one or two primary protagonists and one or more is the animal/character type; or
2) the entry's main focus is the animal/character type.

In what way? It's a giant batch of unrelated tags. The listing includes all since the last time we've posted.
I agree with Sothis. I love that the database moderators have been widening the breadth of the tags as it allows us to have more granular searches as well as get a better insight to the material's aspects without having to read lengthy synopses or risk spoilers.

Can we get Kingdom Building for anime as well? Some anime that would fit just off the top of my head would be That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime, Twelve Kingdoms, and Utawarerumono.

We didn't add it for anime because the only main candidate was Slime. If you think it's enough of a core focus to be given to the other two please provide reasons in the tag suggest section (though based on my admittedly faint memory of 12 kingdoms, it didn't seem like it was the focus or a main one)

No stupid it’s because I never heard of it, I’m just saying.

Please refrain from name-calling.

To explain the term:
Polyamory involves three or more people in a consensual romantic/sexual relationship. There's no competition between partners, though jealousy may occur.

This contrasts to:
  • A Love Triangle, that involves three people in a romantic/sexual but otherwise competitive relationship, where one person may be the target of two peoples' affections (e.g. A likes B, B is dating C, C likes flirting with A). Usually, if one relationship in the triangle were to be consummated, another would have to dissolve.
  • A Harem, which in the anime/manga sense involves a single "target" with multiple suitors. All suitors are competing for the love of the target in their own way, and even fans will become divided over who should be the "end girl/boy".

The tag team felt that there was enough of a difference in dynamic between Polyamory and our other non-monogamy tags (e.g. Harem/Reverse Harem, Love Triangle), as well as the increase of awareness about Polyamory (especially in online circles and on certain TV shows) to warrant the creation of a Poly tag.
