AKA shows that had a niche audience or were cancelled because FOX has a nasty habit of cancelling shows that have a fanbase but don't perform well enough for them to make a ton of money. Firefly and Arrested Development being examples.
And there's Firefly. The generic, blase sci-fi show that people treat like the second coming of Star Wars. Trotted out every time someone hates Fox. They cancelled it cause it sucked. That's it.
They may be "cult" shows to some, but there is definitely a market for more of these type of shows.
The whole "cult following" is a load.
Same with MST3K, it's a cult series with a large following.
MST3K ran for like 10 seasons. It is not a "cult" show.
Netflix is throwing money at niche audiences who television doesn't service.
AKA, throwing money at shows that would die on TV like they should.
An even better example of FOX shitting on their shows: Futurama. Airing new episodes at 6 or 630 during football season meant that the episodes never aired or were pushed back. FOX is godawful with handling their popular IPs so it's nice to see interest from others who might actually treat said IP with respect.
Oh, Futurama. You mean the uncancelled show with 4 movies, 2 additional seasons and zero Netflix in sight?
I don't know a single person who hasn't watched Arrested Development, but that's just me.
You do now.
It's one of those shows that people love to quote constantly and, as a person who hates comedy, is one of the few comedy series I've ever seen that appeals to me. I don't know where you get the idea nobody watched Arrested Development. I think pop culture in general would beg to differ.
Pop culture also said people watched Buffy. NO ONE watched Buffy.
You can find a lot of foreign shows through Google, sure, but having a legal outlet to watch them is a safer bet than pirating and Netflix quality and lack of porn ads on sidebars is always a bonus compared to whatever streaming website is the alternative.
One, I don't care about 'legal outlets'. I've made that abundantly clear in regards to anime.
Two, it's called AdBlock.
Netflix is killing television because television sucks and more people want to watch what they want when they want.
Television is fine. And if people can't wait a goddamn week for the next episode, that's their problem not mine.
Netflix is good for me because it has every season of Star Trek, a show that would otherwise cost me hundreds of dollars to own every episode of and only plays reruns on BBC every weekend.
EVERYONE has Star Trek. From frigging NBC.com, to reruns on local cable. It's not hard to find.
I won't deny that the majority of their original programming has been pretty lackluster, but I also can't deny that the service is extremely useful for those of us who would rather enjoy the content they are consuming than sit in front of a television set, scanning through 1000 channels with nothing on only to have to scan through the channels again just to find something serviceable.
Again, others peoples impatience is not my problem.
Television has been killing itself for years anyway. People have grown tired of reality shows, cop shows, and dumb sitcoms.
Cause Netflix doesn't have ANY of that. Not like they rebooted FULL HOUSE or anything...
More people are turning toward binge watching and shows containing actual plots that act as long-form movies.
Binge watching is stupid. It kills any conversation about the show, cause all people wanna discuss in the finale.
Its why HBO is seeing so much success, AMC is seeing the same, and FX as well. Audiences crave more intelligent and comprehensive television shows and are sick of the crap. If streaming kills TV I could care less. I want to see Comcast go down in flames anyway.
And I wanna see Netflix implode. Cause it's pointless and stupid.
